Gauge is not so important here. You want to get a nice look to your knitted work. The completed project will be about 12” tall and quite stretchy!

Finishing:
Take the bottom of the tube and quarter it like so:

Results look like these:

I like to crochet it closed with a contrasting color yarn that will be used for the tie. This is similar to picking up stitches through two pieces and binding them off immediately. So that’s an option for you as well. Alternatively, you could sew it closed.
Crocheting the bottom closed:
Begin at the center, working from right to left, if you are a rightie. Lefties, I imagine you work in reverse. Poke the crochet hook through two sections of knitting and pull up a loop of your contrasting color yarn. (Leave a tail of about four to six inches.) You’ll have one loop on the needle. Repeat. Two loops on needle. Wrap yarn around needle and pull through both loops. That’s one single crochet! Continue until you reach the corner.
Cut yarn, thread it through a tapestry needle and sew it through to the inside where you can weave in the end.
Repeat for each corner of the bag. Bring all yarn tails to the inside of the work to weave them in and close up any gaps.

Fancy Drawstring Closure
You will create two I-cord, twisted or crocheted drawstrings, between two and three feet long. Make a matched pair. Thread through the bag eyelets in opposite directions as follows:
Tie or graft together internally.

Cast on 87 instead of 88.
Seed stitch: k1p1 for 3”.
Knit stockinette for 6”.
Seed stitch for 1 ½” more.
Make one stitch (increase any way you like.)
Continue above with the Ribbing Variation of your choice.
The stockinette area of the body will be perfect for some embroidery!
