I need a really nice red... like devil red. Can you dye a nice red or is that asking for bleeding? Should I buy already red wool and if so anyone got a recommendation?
TIA!

My vote would be for buying it. I use fisherman's and I can't seem to get a red or pink that doesn't have "yellow" undertones. And although I can set the dye and it doesn't bleed or transfer---I think the red tends to fade more over time.
I hear that Cascade 220 (I think it is called) has LOTS of colors -surely they would have what you need.

I am working with a red from Cascade 220 right now.... they have a LOT of reds to choose from... actually the red is for a soaker for our own danzarooni.

If you use a boat load of Tropical Punch Kool Aid you can get a pretty nice red. I have used Cascade red and even that bleeds in the water.

I have to say I HATE tropical punch KA...I have NEVER gotten the color I wanted to get with it.
I think red must not "set" well...I made a stawberry soaker for the chunky wonder class and the red wasn't colorfast either (I think it was White Buffalo)

red (all reds, no matter the dye) are a bit trnsitory, they are the least colorfast. I've heard it becuase the molecular structure of the red isn't as stable as other colors, but that's a bit over my head to think about, LOL!!
I get a good red from stovetop, acid dyes in the scarlet shade. Rinse forever, and it will still probably leech a bit in subsequent washes, though!

You are right. I once sat through a color correction lecture.... IIRC red molecules are easily displaced by water...I think they are bigger (but I may have that backwards) The same property that makes it hard to get say a blond to stay red......is what makes it very hard for a natural redhead to be any other color.

Same reason that red paint on cars oxydizes (or whatever, I'm not smart) faster than others?? Weird stuff.

Tropical punch is different in Canada? Red molecules are big? This thread is really educational. ;)

just FYI every color of cascade i've ever worked with has bled some.
I dyed w/ Black Cherry KA the other day, and I'm really pleased w/ the results. It is a bit deeper than devil red and maybe looks a little weathered, but maybe you can use it for future reference. Here's a pic - it's on the right mixed w/ Raspberry Reaction (blue): http://theknittykitty.com/images/wiltonska.jpg I used four packets of each color/flavor for 4 oz. of yarn.

Oooo... that looks good!
And, how are you rolling those so well??? Did you get a swiff?
I ordered some red wool/mohair from Lamb's Pride.

Your red and blue looks a lot like the colors I got when I made a soaker for Niels (http://www.abigailvr.net/temp/ww101/redandblue.jpg). I used the same flavors of koolaid.
heeeeeeey, that's my yarn! :brow
Niels is so handsome, Abi, how do you stand it?
