The Leg Cuff Recipe File!

Let's use this thread to list a variety of leg cuff instructions for pants cuffs! It's come to my attention that that's an area we have not explored in depth.

So, if you are willing to divulge, please share your favorite leg cuff patterns. Please include how many stitches are needed (ie. multiple of four, odd number, etc.) List attributes, and a photo if you have one. Like so:
*****************************************
Garter Leg Cuffs

stitch count
any number of stitches

attributes
keeps the cast off end from curling too much
gives a bit of visual weight at the bottom
uses an average amount of yarn (doesn't eat up yardage)

pattern
knitting in the round: alternate one knit row, one purl row, to desired length.
knitting flat: knit all rows to desired length

known issues
garter stitch in the round creates a slight "jog" at the beginning of the round.
*****************************************
Pam - the one time I did garter stitch cuffs they kept flipping up on me - any thoughts on that?

end with a purl row so the curl goes under and block the heck out of them! :thumb

*****************************************
If you want to add your two cents to Garter Leg Cuff just add it to this thread and I'll cut and paste to this post. I just zipped this off fast to get the ball rolling. Also, if you have a picture to donate, post here, and I'll add to the recipe.

Help me make this an awesome resource! There are still some easy ones we can cover! ;)

OK, I'll play,

Seed Stitch/Moss Stitch Leg Cuffs

stitch count
must be odd to avoid a "jog"

attributes
keeps the cast off end from curling too much
gives a bit of visual weight at the bottom
uses an average amount of yarn (doesn't eat up yardage)
Yeah, that ;)(although maybe seed stitch uses a bit more yarn than garter because it's a kind of ribbing).

pattern
knitting in the round: 1st row K1, *P1, K1* repeat between * around, second row P1, *K1, P1* repeat between * around and so on.
knitting flat: 1st row K1, *P1, K1* repeat between * to end, 2nd row as first row and so on.

known issues
If you get the order wrong you end up with ribbing.

And that explanation is why Pam is a pattern writer and I'm not :scratchc: .

Great Minds Think Alike Cuffs

stitch count
any number of stitches

attributes
sturdy
cool-looking
gender neutral
can be replicated to use for a hidden drawstring or elastic waistband.

pattern
knitting in the round:

knit leg to 1-1.5 inches before the end of your inseam measurement. To be extra fancy, you can use different colors for each section of the cuff.

Row 1: purl

Section 1 (cuff as seen from the outside):

Rows 2 through 1"-1.5" (desired length of cuff): knit in the round

At desired length: purl one row

At this point, you can change color if you like.

Section 2 (inside cuff): Repeat Section 1 until until you have as many st st rows on the inside of the cuff as you do on the outside of the cuff and then bind off.

Divide cuff in half, folding bottom half inside up into the leg. Making sure you keep everything nice and even, hem cuff to the first purl row you did at the beginning.

known issues
Any color changes will create a jog. I like to do a jogless jog at the beginning of each round where the color or pattern will show the jog. I also knit the first stitch of a new color with the yarn from the old color, creating two loops that I knit as one when I come to it in the next round.

This is the one I'll be using on the overalls I'm working on right now:
*****************************************
Applied I-cord Edging

stitch count
any number of stitches

attributes
makes a nice rolled-look edge while keeping the knit-stitch side visible
makes excellent use of contrasting yarn
Holds a firm edge (not much stretch)

pattern
With contrasting (edging) yarn, cast on 3 stitches. Knit 2, then k2tog (the last edging stitch, and one stitch from your work). Slip the 3 completed stitches back to the left-hand needle, and repeat. Once you're down to 3 stitches, break yarn, thread through the 3 remaining stitches, and pull. Use the yarn tail to graft the I-cord ends together.

known issues
If you are graft-shy, getting a seamless look may take some concentration. Otherwise, this is a VERY easy & clean-looking finish.

Simple crochet ruffle

stitch count
Any number of stitches

attributes
simple "foufy" addition to girly cuffs
sturdy
stops cuff rolling

pattern
Cast off cuffs, taking care not to make your cast off too loose.
Use your choice of crochet hook. For small ruffles, use the size recommended for your yarn. For larger, go up a few sizes.
Using your hook, pick up first stitch. Double crochet twice into each stitch. (For rufflier ruffles, you can do three in each).

Once you ruffle your way around, weave in yarn end, and viola.....girly!

known issues
Requires a crochet hook and basic hooker skills.
Eats up the yarn
Doesn't roll well

Great thread, Pamela!

Cynthia's Flair

at the start of cuff, increase every other stitch for one round creating this slight flare: use same size needles as your leg and cast off in a needle 2 sizes larger.

I added the ribbon for a cuteness.

Anybody care to add the recipe for picot edge cuffs? I have to admit, I haven't been very creative when it comes to leg cuffs and the custom I am knitting up asked for picot... ;)

TIA mamas!

3x1 ribbed cuff

stitch count
must be multiples of 4

attributes
non-rolling
tailored look
looks nice both cuffed or flat
doesn't alter width of leg

pattern
k3p1 without changing needle size. CO in pattern, in knit, or in purl (photo shows purl CO).

known issues
i like to arrive at multiples of 4 (if necessary) by increasing 1, 2, or 3 stitches using the kf&b increase: k2kf&b k3p1, etc.

when changing color for cuff, knit one row in cuff color before beginning ribbing.

So many great ideas!!

Ruffly cuff

stitch count
any number of stitches

attributes
Cute for girly pants
Adds a little length without being too long
Nice for capris

pattern
knitting in the round: Knit to about 1/2" before inseam measurement is reached. Change color if desired. Increase in all stitches (I use kfb) for one round. Knit in the round until desired ruffle length is reached - I do about 1 inch. Block, smoothing out to keep from rolling and squishing in to keep from flaring out too much

known issues
Needs to be blocked or it will roll
Uses a lot of yarn

pic (I also sewed on a little crochet chain bow)

Picot cuffs (I've only done this on hats and booties, forgive me if it's different for pants but I am pretty sure it's the same)

Knit to inseam measurement. *K3, YO, K2tog* for one round/row (adjust first # depending on multiple of stitches in your leg). Work in stockinette for about 1 inch. Fold over with "holey" row on fold. Whipstitch end to inside of pants, like a basic hem.

Aussie flower ruffle

A large ruffle that lays almost flat like a circle - very cute for capri's or pants.

Work before binding (casting) off the stitches of main piece or pick up and knit stitches along the edge of the main piece.
A multiple of 6 sts plus 5 is required to increase sts to get patt rep.
The M1 sts are made to the right and left (e.g. M1L, M1R)

Row 1 - (RS) P5, *K1, p5; rep from *to end.
Row 2 - K5, *p1, k5; rep from * to end.
Row 3 - P5, *M1R, k1, M1L, p5; rep from * to end.
Row 4 - K5, * p3, k5; rep from * to end.
Row 5 - P5, *M1R, k3, M1L, p5; rep from * to end.

Cont in this way, inc 1 st at each side of ksts on RS rows and work the extras sts as p sts on WS rows until there are 11 knits sts for each ruffle, ending with a WS row. Bind (cast off) loosely in patt.

Bump this...I would love some pics! I can't decide on which cuff to do for my DDs longies. I don't want to change the color if I don't have to but, my waist is a solid color.
