Hi All,
Ok, for those of you using Wiltons Violet for purple...I got lots of shades..vigrant pinky purple to blue! Did I do something wrong? It's a great coloring, but not what I was going for. I'd like to get shades of just purple...like lavendar to dk purple. Is that possible? Could someone help me on this? Purty please???? :mwah

purple seems to be a universal problem.

the only way I've found to get a reliable, duplicable purple is with acid dyes.

That's the purple colorway I've been trying to get! I just can't get a good purple either. Just got some more yarn so I'll have to try again ...

That's the color I want!!!!!!!!!
Ok...LTK...If you do acid dyes, are you referring to KA or the Pro-whatever dye that is used for cotton?
If you use the Pro-- then can you use vinegar/water bath to soak rather than the soda ash stuff? I'm a bit scared of that stuff...
PLMK :)

I wish I had kept the purple color I get from Wiltons. It ain't purple! It is the same thing you are getting.

I get the same sort of variegated pinkish/purplish/blueish from Wilton's - I like it, but it's def. not just "purple".

KA *is* an acid dye in that the way it works is fromt eh citric acis (and additional vinegar) but the washfast and colorfastness of KA isn't very good. No matter how well it's set, KA dyed yarn WILL fade over time. I don't use KA, I use true acid dyes for all my wool (with vinegar or citric acid baths and rinses) and I use procion fiber reactive/mx for cotton, with soda ash and urea fixers. Soda ash isn't scary or dangerous at all, it's what they use in pools to balance the pH/ I actually get mine at the local pool supply place, it's labelled in big white containers, pH UP!
Procion isn't an acid dye, it's fiber reactive, geared to plant fibers. Acid dyes (Gaywool, Jaquard) are geared to use on animal fibers. While procion will work on wool (and it was what I used exclusively for quite a long time) and produce beautiful colors and depth, it's not *predictable*. Meaning, what you see isn't always what you'll get. You can have a beautiful purple in teh bottle when you mix it, but on the wool yarn it'll maybe mutate to a deep brown, a muddy black, or a funky blue. It just adds more guesswork, and is often difficult to reproduce unless you are very good at recording what you did (down to water mesuarements, etc) in order to duplicate the colors.
the best places I've found to buy acid dyes are prochem.com, earthguild.com (.org, maybe?) and dharmatrading.

What's the name of the acid dye you get from Dharma, Theresa? Their acid dye link comes up as Jaquard.
