I think I am in the 'advanced beginner' stage as I have been knitting almost a year now but only have little time in the evenings to do it.
I want SO badly to make a few things that require me to 'pick up stitches' but I have no idea how to do this correctly.
Is there anywhere on the net that teaches this? I bought the knitting DVD (by the Vogue editor) but it doesn't mention picking up stitches.
I know this is probably simple, but unless I can see it, I have no idea how this is done.
Anyone???
Thanks SO much, I am frustrated (I want to start my new stripey slippers!!!)

I can't find a tutorial that shows picking up stitches the way that you need to for the Stripey Slippers....
Once you knit to the point where you need to pick up the stitches you will see that there are bumps along the edge created by the garter ridges. You just pull the bump up with the left hand needle and put it on the right hand needle. VERY easy! It's much easier to figure it out when you actually have it in your hands. Give it a shot. I bet you'll get it! :)

So it seems simple, but....do you always pick up stitches from the outside (or right side)?
Again, thank you. I know these things are very very easy for all of you who are very talented knitters, but for me it's new and I don't want to screw it up :).
Now, off to make some slippers. I have made felted moccs for my entire family (3 kids and hubby) and I am ready to do something new.
Just saw there were new posts while I was posting, you guys are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that it's standard to pick them up from the right side, unless of course the pattern states otherwise. ;)

sara is the woman and has thoroughly answered already, so my work is done here, LOL ;)
The only thing I'll add is you can make it even easier, don't put the stitches on the right needle - just run the left tip throught he bump on each ridge and then knit (or purl, depending on which side you're on in the pattern) off the left hand needle like you would a "normal" stitch ;)

Thanks T! That does make more sense than the way I was doing it. :)

Two things:
Sara, I somehow thought your name was Sue! (I had the sigs turned off is about the only defense I can come up with...) So, if I refered to you as something other than Sara, I am so sorry! (What a dolt I am with names! At least here I see them. When I have to learn them only by hearing them, just forget it. I swear some of the peopl at work must think I'm getting senile. I called Justin Jason all one day, and I can't seem to stop calling Scott "Jim". Loser!)
And, to do smileys: See under the box where it says "Go Advanced? If you press that before you start typing your reply, you will have a whole new universe of possibilities, including smilies.
OK? Try it! Patti

You aren't senile...those people just weren't named properly when they were babies...Blame it on their parents I say....
I am horrible with names too......I help in K and I am sure there are kids who think I belong back in preschool b/c I always mix them up......(And the principal is famous for knowing all 367 students by name by the first week of school.....granted they aren't all new....But she even remembers my dd is not Cadence any more but now Cadee....which I can't even remember!)

ok, i have to be either REALLY dumb or totally lost....
i hit the 'go advanced' and i don't see ANY smilies other than the ones that allow me to chose an icon for my title, not the cute smilies so i can show you my dance moves and vomiting (ha!).
thanks so much for explaining the picking up stitches. i am really hoping it makes sense once i have the yarn and needles in my hands. the video was easy to see how to do it but since T likes to mix things up a bit (ha!) i am thinking i need to just try it and see how things go.
