I'm sure exactly how to do this....heat set fabric paint on fabric with an iron....

Am I just holding the iron above the painted area?
Steam....I don't think so...
Or am I directly ironing on the shirt from the inside or over a piece of wax paper?

None of these plans seems quite right.

let it dry for 24 hours and then just turn the iron to med-high (no steam) and press it over a pressing cloth. lay the cloth over the painted area and just hold the iron on it for about 30 secs.

well, you can buy a pressing cloth in notions section of a store or you can use a swatch of a nice high count cotton. they're really cheap if you want to buy one. like this:
