You could get the item a little wet and set it on a paper towel or white rag and see if it bleeds...

I had a problem with bleeding when I first started so I started putting my yarn though very vigarous setting and testing to make sure it didn't bleed. I would rinse it really well, then soak it in pure vinegar and steam it for 30 min and let cool. I would wash it out with a little dish soap or synthropol. Then I soaked the yarn in very warm/hot water for 15 min to see if the color came out. If the water was colored, I would repeat the vinegar/steaming and washing process again.
Now, I am more confident in my dye setting and I only test for colorfastness on the worst "offenders" (i.e. red, dark brown, etc.)
