I saw the cutest hat at Gap... on top, instead of a traditional pom-pom, were loops of crochet chain. I know how to make a basic chain, but how can I work it into the actual top of a knitted hat rather than have to tack it down every few inches? Any ideas?
Thanks!!

I made something similar (I think/hope) for the top of a hat, but I did tack it down when I was finished...ie. crochet separate then added it.
I chained X number of stitches, slip stitched it to the begining so I had a loop, then repeated and repeated and repeated usually going back to that first stitch until I had a nice shape. I didn't use the same number of chain stitchs before folding it back so I had different lengths of loops. Make sense?
It worked because it was a "happy accident" and I didn't have to fiddle with making a real pom-pom!

Oh, that's good... I was just going to make a really long chain and then sew the loops into it, but your plan is much better!!! Can you tell I'm not really a crochet-er?
