I am going to use this to make my first pair of socks.

What size needle should I try first and what type of gauge is typical for socks?

I've seen a lot of patterns for 7sts=1" on US1, but I tend to be a loose knitter on DPNs, so I can get that on US 2 or even 3.

Are you sure you knit loose? I am a loose knitter and I have to go down a size to make gauge on almost everything...
