You know those ones Renate does sometimes in her sets? A Rectangle hat with one tassle on each corner. Where would one find a pattern or instructions for that? Can they be knit in the round or do they have to be knit flat?

TIA!

like the last two in the front row?

mine aren't pure rectangles, i shape them somewhat, but you could do something similar that is just a tube to the circumference you want, i'd say about 7" high for a toddler (you can measure this) a 3 needle bind off along the top (or a graft if you feel like it) and two tassels.

ok, so i just checked some hats i have here. i do shape mine because i like there to be more of an "ear" effect like this tassel-less one (for a doll, obviously)

this is Maya wearing one that is a bit too big for her.

the circumference of this one is 21 (her head is 19") and the height is 8.5" total, with the brim flipped up it's 7".

so if you skip the shaping and just do a tube you'll be fine.

you could do my free snowflake hat (without the snowflakes) and istead of doing the ties at the point doing tassles ;)

FUNNY, I just LOVE my Renate hat and I was looking at it and trying to figure it out too! I want to make MORE! Do you guys think the LTK one would be similar enough? I'm "all about" free right now as I've spent SO much money on knitting stuff in the "less than a month" since I've started!

oh that's cute. I'll have to look at it in detail later. I get confused by patterns still. :)

Picture you are a NEW KNITTER. Could you do that hat? What's needed for the pattern?

Here is a pattern for one. http://straw.com/cpy/patterns/poof_baby_hat.html

I make mine on my knitting machine. Cast on 60 stitches and knit for I believe 40 rows or until long enough. Take fabric off machine and place on 2 needles and do a 3 needle bind-off. Sew the side seam, at tassels and there you have it.

Just knit circular until desired length. bind off the top and make tassles for the corners. easy peasy!

That is true! :)

For the Baby Tao, you knit a square in garter first (all knit back and forth), then pick up stitches around (very easy) and knit in the round for a while, then back to back and forth in garter. Simple, but not the MOST simple... I was always up for a little challenge though, as a new knitter. :om

LOL I have been doing these forever! They are a rectangle (or you can do it in the round) just sew up the side and top and add tassles to the corners. No pattern needed, just measure. :D

This one (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter03/PATTpinklady.html) from Knitty looks pretty simple.

Melanie Falick was knitting one on knitty gritty - the same one that's in the "Kids Knitting" book: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/na_knitting/article/0,2025,DIY_14141_3083837,00.html

Well, Julia, I guess you won't see this for a while since you're in labor and all :) but I will post anyway... I used Manos... mmmmm... it took almost the whole skein, but it came out very huge and I felted it a little to shrink it. I tried it on a 5 yo, a 3 yo, and me, and it fit us all!

I'm just finished the knitting of a sprout hat. I'm binding off tonight and then making the tassles and flowers tomorrow ;)
