I am wondering what you ladies do while riding in the car on long trips to avoid compression wicking. My dd has very sensitive skin and I use wool exclusively, I don't own any other type of diaper cover. However every time she is in the car for a while her diaper wicks through her soaker. Ewwwww, it is gross. I thought about knitting up a rectangle of wool and placing it between her diaper and her soaker to see if that helps. I could even felt it to help provide more resistance to the leak. Her diaper doesn't even have to be very wet, one pee will wick straight through because of the strap pushing on her diaper. What do you do? Thanks :mwah

Yeah, it happens to me too. Somethmes I remove her pants (so shes just in a dipe and soaker) and I put a prefold underneath her to not get pee on the carseat. That said, I am not opposed to using inexpensive Bummis Whisper Pants (nylon) covers for long car rides.

That is interesting. I've never had that happen. I am curious to see the responses.

I haven't had that happen, but I would suggest a super absorbant diaper first, even put a doubler or two in there. Then, knit the wool doubler and put it in her wet zone too. That should keep her carseat dry.
I liked the suggestion of putting a prefold in the bottom of the carseat too! Great idea!

I know she can't have PUL on her skin, Tami, but maybe a piece of PUL or Procare b/t her soaker and other clothing or the strap and carseat?? It's thin enough not to be a safety issue and wouldn't be touching her or keeping air from circulating. Just a thought.

What about using a wool doubler inside the diaper? Sort of the same idea as you mentioned, but you put it underneath the doubler in her diaper. It forces the diaper to absorb everything it can, and then it begins absorbing as well.

She wears some pretty hefty diapers when we are on trips like that. They are awesome and will hold way more fluid than they should ever be forced to, but the compression is awful. The diaper will be wet in a 2 in circle straight through and then most of the pee is on her carseat. I like the idea of putting something in just the wetzone, just to keep the compression down. I would rather it be wool but if that wont work, I will go with a true barrier like PUL or procare. Davina, do you have any thoughts on how I would actually do it? How I would put the procare (what I have onhand) over those parts of the seat? That strap that comes up between her legs gets the most of it, I think it is the culprit to begin with. I would rather keep the pee inside the diaper and not let it get past the soaker at all. Maybe I need a pocket dipaer or two? I could maybe make a fake pocket diaper that has the procare just in the wetzone so she could still wear wool over the top and the sides would breathe? I would think being in a carseat would be sweaty to begin with, I don't want to add to it with the moisture barrier :( My oldest just wore plastic pants and it was never an issue, this baby has such sensitive skin I have to be super careful. Thanks ladies, I am enjoying the ideas. The more the better :D

Have you ever used such a thing? I love this idea. Should I felt it?

I have a few. I believe they are crocheted. I was them in the machine with my dipes, so yes I felted them. They work really well.

I just meant, a small piece of the PUL. Put it in the wetzone. Adding more and more bulk to the diaper worries me, being in the carseat and all... seeing how it would all compress in a crash and basically be space b/t your baby and the straps... but you know that. ;) I was just thinking maybe 4"x12" or so, then stick that in her soaker or b/t the soaker and carseat strap (since I assumed that was the issue).

I am with you Davina on the extra bulk thing, it is scary. She wears fitteds when we are out and you know what every one of those look like, inside and out ;) Then I usually cover that diaper with one of my favorite soakers which you also know what look like, stitch by stitch. . .hehe. You are right on what the issue is and I am going to try out the piece of procare in her soaker thing. I was thinking you meant to put the procare in her carseat and I was very confused. Of course things here are crazy today so that probably isn't difficult. I will make some of the felted wool squares though, I think they would be good for non carseat use when the soaker just needs a boost like at night time.

It's okay. I got about 5 hrs sleep last night, in 3 segments... so I probably said it all wrongly in my first post. :LOL NOt even going to reread it b/c I'll feel dumb.

Oh man, you too? For some reason Ta has been waking up every 3 hours SCREAMING!! It takes about 1/2 hr to settle her down too. It has been several days now and I am really ready for her to sleep through the night again. I think she might be growing though, she eats non stop. From the moment she gets up until the moment she goes to bed she is eating. When she wakes up at night she isn't really awake enough for a snack though, it is weird. Well I guess you didn't ask about all that  Hopefully Gwen will sleep better tonight, I am assuming it is her keeping you up ;)

Yes, I've used them with good success, particularly overnight. They are very fast to crochet (even for me, a VERY novice crocheter). You just crochet a big oval or rectangle shape -- you want it to be relatively thick and dense. You can felt them if you like -- they work fine either way.

How about using a wool cover like from www.baby-its-you.com?

Those covers are sooooo cute!! Do you think a wool fabric cover would be better than a soaker? I have some felted wool fabric here and could make a cover :)

I found knit wool yarn to be better than felted wool fabric. PF worked best for long nights w/ a toddler or long car rides.
The wool doubler is a great idea too.

I think it matters what kind of wool. I have one that I don't think will ever leak! lol
