I want to get large quantities of yarn. I use blue face leicester wool. It's VERY soft. It's dubbed "Poor man's cashmere". I've had many mamas tell me it's the softest wool they own (or at least one of the softest). It knits up very nicely and it wears very well.

The price would be $9.50 for a hank. One hank is 8.8 ounces (250 grams). This knits up at least 2 soakers, sometimes 3 depending on the size.

If you want samples of it, I'd be glad to send them, just PM me your addy.

I need to order before Sept. 1st as their prices are going up. So, my cutoff date will be August 25th.

how much would shipping be to the US?

It will obviously depend on how much you get.

1 hank would cost $3.85 USD for ground (2-3 weeks max.) or 5.10 USD for air (1-2 weeks max.). That's being conservative.

If you want more than 1, I'd have to figure it out based on zip codes.

As an example, I used from here to New York - 4 hanks - and it cost $10.60 USD. Remember that would make AT LEAST 10 soakers.

I also used California as another example same amount of yarn and got $13.65 USD.

If you want me to look it up for you, let me know. ;)

Where does this yarn come from? A big farm? Small farms??? Sounds like a good deal :)

Is there a link to see this wool?
I want to be a wool snob but haven't gotten too terribly sophisticated with them yet.

I asked about the farm(s) where the wool would come from and this is what I got from the supplier:

The blue face leicester comes from yorkshire area of Northen England
know as poorman's cashmere, it is one of the longwool breeds, which are known for long lustrous locks, one of my favourites soft but strong and wears well. I would not think they are grown strict organic, but mostly are raised on grass so little off-farm food, sheep are quite easy to grow but because of size of field to sheep required (1 sheep to 3 acres) I would suspect few are grown strictly organic the wool is sold to the mill whom make sliver and then spin it. Because of the amount we buy it would come from many different farms.

I also wanted to add that I order natural so I can dye myself even though she offers hand-dyed but it's $5 cdn extra (aprox. $3.80). The website recommends using 3/3.75 mm (3/5 US) but I use a 5 US for the waisband and 7 US for the body but you could use smaller ones as they recommend. I find it's a nice weight for soakers, not too thin and not too thick.

Davina - This is the wool I used for the waist and leg cuffs on your soaker - which is going out soon. ;)

Oh my goodness, are you buying from The Fleece Artist!? If so, you will NOT be disappointed, I have actually met Kathryn and she is a doll. Very nice, took the time to talk to me, dh even if the store was closed and she was about to leave her home.

All of the yarns she carries are too die for!!! She dyes wonderfully too having drooled all over her floor when I went to her store. LOL!

Now is she sending you all the yarn ordered and then you'll be sending it to people!? Yeah, I know coops usually work like that but I'm from Canada and wonder if shipping wouldn't be too much.

Hi Joe!

Isn't it amazing yarn!!! I LOVE IT! You're only 2 hours away from me, I'm in Ottawa. I don't think shipping would cost too much, if so, maybe we could just meet up instead, I LOVE Montreal and haven't been to La Ronde yet this year. ;)

Ok, I have started a database in my Yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wooly_wonders_by_nada/database?method=reportRows&tbl=2 . You will have to sign up first though.

You can go ahead and put your order in. I will be mailing off samples tomorrow so for those who want one, please PM me. :)

ok, i think the lower prices were on the roving for spinning :( it's a hard wool to find and most of the farms are not selling the spun stuff, just the combed top for spinning. oh well..........................

What do you mean? I have no idea about how wool is spun, lol

well you can buy the actual wool, un spun and spin it yourself into yarn :) the places that i found it for super cheap, like 15.00/ lb are selling the combed top roving for spinning. so, that doesn't work. the spun stuff from those sheep is pretty expensive, at least at all of the places i could find. so, you have a good deal i think :)

I just received a sample of this yarn from Nada, and I do agree that this is some of the softest wool I've felt. It is maybe a heavy worsted to chunky weight, but it isn't bulky. I did a tester swatch w/ size 8s and got a little more than 4 stitches per inch. The yarn is fluffy, but not fuzzy; and it has a good, moderate stretch. I don't know yet if it will pill; Nada would know that better.

I can't afford more yarn right now, but if another coop comes up later, I'll join then.

Hi Nada,

I just missed out on the Co-op. :bang I was wondering if you were planning on doing another co-op anytime soon?

Nada
09-18-2004, 05:38 AM
It will all depend on how much interest there is in the future. I know many mamas love the yarn so I'm suspecting there might be demand for more and I'd have no problem organizing another one. Right now, I'm waiting for the order to come in, actually I think I'll stop by the PO today and see if it's sitting there (sometimes they do that before putting it on the truck to bring it to me  ). I'll definately let everyone know either here or in my Yahoo group. If you want to try it, I can spare a skein of mine and send it to you. PM me if that's what you want.

I am a little confused. In the co-op you are getting the wool for $8.50 a skew when it normally sells retail for $30 a skew? I must have something wrong because the link I followed said was selling for $30 a skew and I think a co-op deal like this sounds too good to be true. I joined your group and I hope to join the co-op in the future, hopefully my spending previldges (set by my self out of guilt ;)) will be reinstated.

Hmm after looking again it is listed in Canadian $$$, but converted over it would still be about $20 a skew? I don't know the conversion rate but that is a complete guess. Still seems too good to be true.

Are her colors IRL as vibrant as they are on the web page? Because the Blue Greens and the Reds Violets are blinding me. So pretty. I would pay the extra to have it dyed.

Great, now I am just dieing to try some.

Ok, here's how it works...

The regular price for a skein of natural colored wool is $25 cdn ($19.27 USD). The DYED stuff is $30 cdn ($23.12 USD). And yes BTW, the dye job is as beautiful as the pictures - my LYS carries some. Now, if I were to buy 10 skeins the price drops by a bit but by buying 40 skeins, the price drops to half - which comes to $12.50 cdn ($9.50 USD). So THAT's how we got the skeins for only $9.50 (not $8.50 as you wrote in the post, typo maybe?).

Hope that clarifies a bit...

Holy Sheep! :faint $9.50 + extra for dye job and shipping for 8oz skews? I am so in on the next co-op, that is insane for something so beautiful and if it is half as nice and you all say it is I am sure I would be more than pleased. I really hope you do another co-op soon, I would probably buy quite a few skews (once I recieve the swatch and see for myself ;)).

Does the co-op + dye job cost the same if you order a custom dye (I think I read she does more than the 3 colors shown on the site)? Those colors are so vibrant. yummy!

This yarn is mid weight right? By that I mean not super thin but not bulky or thick. I like pretty thin yarn, like TC, LTK and HSY thinness.

Thanks for clarifying for me. :)
