A mama wants me to make a hat with straps so she can tie it under her chin. I have a basic hat pattern, but don't know how to add straps to it. Any ideas? Thanks!
I'd work out where on the hat would be just in front of the ears and then pick up x number of stitches (depending on how wide you want the straps) and knit for however long you want the straps to be. It might be better to add a button on one side and buttonholes on the other. You quite often get straps on earflap hats, I know you do on the Miss Dashwood pattern on www.Knitty.com you could just look at the instructions for one of them and see if you can adjust it to your hat.

The Miss Dashwood pattern actually has buttons on the inside of both sides of the hat, so you can fold up the ear covers and button them inside the hat. The hat actually just ties under the neck. So, it really isn't button on one side, buttonhole on the other. I just wanted to say this in case she looked at that pattern.

I put earflaps/ties on a sewn stocking cap last night - I co 26st, k 4 rows of garter stitch, p1row, then worked in stockinette, decreasing 1 st at beg & end of each knit row until you're left w/ 4 st. Then just I-cord those st until your tie is long enough. Do 2 of those, and Stitch then to the inside of the hat, leaving enough room for brim foldup below the stitching line.
