I swear Ive taken a hundred shots of the same d*mn item in order to get something *close* to what it looks like IRL. I do it inside, outside, in different rooms, in different parts of the yard, in direct light, in shade, I cant keep doing this!!! It is WAAAAY to time consuming!
Does anyone have any tips for taking pictures to get the right colors?

Has a lot to do with your camera. But I put mine (soakers, pants, etc) on the floor (on some spread out white/natural fabric) in a room with flourescent lights, stand over it on a chair and zoom in. That way the flash isn't too close but it's detailed. I haven't ever tried taking pics outside though.

I have a kodak CX6330 I got for christmas from my dad 2003
and we dont have any flourescent lights... actually the lighting in our house completely sucks, which is why I go outside

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, who wrote At Knit's End, always takes pics of her knitting in the garden-- you get outdoor light AND a pretty background.

yes I do take them outside but its VERY give or take as to if I can capture the real colors and i end up taking 4 pictures in a row of each item in each different spot in the yard and it has just gotten to be too much.

My best shots are this way too....but then I get to the monitor and they look completely different- and I am guessing they look different on a lot of the monitors out there too.
