Edited to add link up front: CONTEST! (http://woolywonder.com/contest/idea.htm)

Wouldnt' that be fun?

I need help fleshing out the idea. I thought maybe 'design pam's new cell phone bag' but I dont know if that would be fun for people. So we set up a contest and the winner(s) get prizes. We can have a few categories of prizes like 'most original' and 'silliest' and ?? We can share all the patterns on the site!

We can donate yarn from our stashes for prizes? I could donate patterns and people could donate whatever they wanted. We'd need a panel of judges too. Or it could be a poll vote.

Does that sound like fun? Can you come up with a better idea? We need something fun to jazz up the place.

I think a contest is a great idea, it sounds like alot of fun as long as we have alot of time to complete our entry as alot of us are going away on holidays soon. What if we have different catagories or leave it open to what ever they want to design because not everyone is a pro like some of the wonderful pattern designers we have on this site, that way everyone has a chance and won't feel pressured, for example some of us less experienced pattern designers could design something more simple like a blanket or scarf.

CraftyMommaOf2
08-05-2005, 05:22 AM
i'm in! i love competing!!! i mean...i love a good contest. :pink

my ideas before my first cuppa tea:

*cell phone bag would be supah fun
*catagorie ideas: best overall, most whimsical, ?easiest pattern?, most original, silliest, best crochet pattern, best knit pattern, best felt
*maybe have levels to the contest. beginner, intermediate, pro
*end it like end of sept/beg oct?
*i think a banner spot would be a good prize. ;)
*:marnie are required or i don't want to play.

more ideas after tea.

Ooo, I'm in!!! I have been wanting to design my own pattern, but like Jewel said I am new at it and don't want to be in a category with all your design geniuses!!!

Oh, and I guess you need a :marnie to officially be part of this thread LOL

And why IS the doughnut named Marnie? I get why the turtle is named Theresa...

OOH OOh OOh! A contest maybe just what I need to kick me in the pants, jump outside my box of using patterns, and try my hand at designing.

A little scary for me, I'm a "follow instructions" kind of girl!!

Definitely a category for 'first time designer' (um that would be me in there)

I am already drumming up ideas....

Is there a 'standard size' for cell phone bags - there are huge differences in the actual phones.....

mommomrebecca
08-05-2005, 08:11 AM
If there is going to be an "other" category, I'll totally enter, as I find it difficult to design normal things. Like a "think outside the box tribute to wool". Please? I already know what I'm going to do. :arwyn Otherwise I want to be a judge and I'll donate a prize either way :sunshine

And you can find killer Chanukkah doughnuts at my house year round :marnie :marnie :marnie

How about a bag design contest? bags aren't that hard to design and then people can put the level of difficulty they want into it. Big bags, small bags, doggie bags, diaper bags....

I think those categories are stellar, too. Most whimisical, ugliest thing I've ever seen knitted, most original idea, This is the most gorgeous yarn I've ever felt, etc.

Can I help judge, just so I can see all the cool stuff?

Could we have a small fee for entering - like a buck or two and use that money for prizes? I think I may have a few things that I could donate lurking somewhere in my stash. Like some of this freaking ugly yarn in the skien that knits up pretty. lol!

Ooh, and we should have for a prize that the winners in the categories get their patterns published in the first ever Wooly Wonder Newsletter. Yeah, I like that idea.

jmo
08-05-2005, 09:23 AM
I've already drawn out my pattern. :cheer

Oh, I might design a regular bag. Not sure though. I'm not as creative as I like to think I am. :LOL

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 10:03 AM
Wow! This was fun to wake up to!

So, here's the thing. I have a great little bag that I call my 'essentials bag' ...

It fits my phone and it has a little zipper on the front for my credit cards. It's not knit. I got it on my honeymoon, and I use it all the time. It has a drawstring that I wear around my neck. I can toss it into my knitting bag or diaper bag, or just sling it around my neck to run into a store. I love it! My phone is a palm/phone so it's on the bigger size. But I'll measure.

I have been agonizing over replacing this bag because it's getting all worn out. I've knit one replacement that was a total bomb. Frogged, reknit, total bomb. So, I thought this would be a good idea for a contest, who can design a little bag that would work. I think it would be a great project for knitters/moms/everyone.

If that is too small of a concept we can go with 'design a bag' in general. Let me know if the more specific idea works for anyone.

So, I'm thinking maybe early October as a deadline if we can get this off the ground. A little bag wouldnt be so time-intensive.

I dont want to charge people, I'm sure we can get prizes donated by our members. Even if it's just some yarn from your stash, we can surely compile a good amount of prizes.

Keep those ideas coming!

jmo
08-05-2005, 10:10 AM
Can you take a quick pic of it, Pam?

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 10:11 AM

twouglyducks

Ok, check out my outline here:

http://woolywonder.com/contest/idea.htm

marnie
08-05-2005, 11:21 AM
questions:

does this need to be *your* ideal essentials bag, pam? or just AN essentials bag? i mean, what if i have different essentials than you do?

definitely let's use entries as prizes.

i think if you're claiming ownership of patterns that you need a "credit given to designer" clause.

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 11:28 AM
Well one winning category can be "Pam's Essentials Bag" and we can have other winning categories too!

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 11:29 AM
So, maybe the pattern is for an adjustable size bag that can be knit to the dimensions of your phone/items?

marnie
08-05-2005, 11:35 AM
mostly i was thinking of the things *I* need in an essentials bag.

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 11:36 AM
So what's Marnie's Essentials bag?

RufusBeans
08-05-2005, 11:40 AM
I'll donate something

jmo
08-05-2005, 11:40 AM
Gosh, Pam, that bag is gorgeous. I think I want one just like it. :bag

marnie
08-05-2005, 11:49 AM
slot for a metrocard (subway card - credit card sized) outside, no closure on it. so i can grab it.

key clip inside.

wallet OR place to hold cash and cards.

cell phone

eyeglass case for clip ons (very slim)

lip balm

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 12:12 PM
So, would that be too big to hang around your neck with all that stuff in it?

marnie
08-05-2005, 12:15 PM
i don't think so, pam. the eyeglass case is only 1" wide and super light. i think it's 5 or 6" long. my phone is little and so are my keys. i can do without a wallet if i has space for my wallet stuff.

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 12:22 PM
So the space my big phone takes up could be used for your keys and lip balm and whatever. My keys are gigantic and could never go in there.

So my Essentials bag could also be your Essentials bag just by tweaking the measurements, no?

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 12:24 PM
Thanks Hil!

Ok, the patterns will remain the property of the designers!

pmcgary
08-05-2005, 03:22 PM
Oh, well that would be cool. I used to always have a bag similar, only I prefer a super long strap and wear them sling style across my chest.

I like the long strap thing too...I made the Kool aid felted bag and thankfully a friend warned me that felting would seriously shorten the strap...before felting my bag hit the floor (when over my shoulder....) It just perfect - hip length....

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 05:48 PM
Cool! So what should I do to revise the requirements?

ravingcutie
08-05-2005, 07:18 PM
Well, if we're offering different categories of bags, do we need more requirements? Did we decide on just making Pamela bags or is are there going to be other categories?

I was thinking (with my pattern writing cap on) that allowing people the freedom to make their strap as long as they want to suit their needs is not a big deal. You could knit the same bag either with a neck-length strap or a longer strap for slinging across the chest or over the shoulder.

pamelamama
08-05-2005, 07:24 PM
Right, so maybe the challenge will be to design an Essentials Bag with certain criteria, and the pattern could be adjusted to suit the size of the wearer/user/maker whatever. I'll work on the page tonight. Anything else I"m missing?

ravingcutie
08-05-2005, 07:29 PM
That sounds reasonable to me. I think there's going to be lots of fun variations as it is, so making the actual articles for judging as similar as possible and allowing more freedom in the acutal pattern writing seems like and ideal situation for all involved.

twouglyducks
08-05-2005, 07:30 PM
well, the challenge for me will be actually doing this.

Hey, I have some questions. I put them through the WSG, but here you are!
I do have a few questions, since this is for a bag that is essential for
you. Or essentially for you. Now, Loralyn how power mad is THIS??? I
mean, she has her own website, own cadre, own groupies, for hiney's sakes,
and now she's gotta have her own freakin' purse??? And you thought YOU
were the Queen of Soakerland? How sad to have to be the one to break it to
you.... sorry old girl, there's already a Sheriff here in Dodge, and this
town ain't big enuf for both of you...

Well someone was certainly energized by her nap!

Anyway, the questions:
1. What is your favorite color?
2. Any colors you really detest? (That'd make it non-essential in a hurry,
wouldn't it, hehehe.)
3. I'm really into recycling knits. What if I make it out of sweater felt?
4. For most impressive embroidery, is that machine or hand
embroidery? (Hint, hint, maybe you'll have one of each...) Because, how
can hand embroidery compete against a computerized embroidery
machine? Well, OK, except for the Wisteria Soaker... :)
5. What is your favorite kind of candy?

Patti
Not the Queen, that's taken.
Not high maintenance enough to be a princess...
I must be the Jester of Soakerland.... :)

The MadPatter

And a Channukkah tree is what you call it when you're Jewish and a big green tree appears in your home around December. Cause its obviously NOT a Christmas Tree, ya know what I mean??? I had a girl friend in high school who called theirs that.

Yo! Hey, Ru-thayyyyyyy! How's thangs in Jolly old England? We just finished reading the first (2 1/2" thick!!!) volume of Winston Churchill's biography "The Last Lion, Winston Spencer Churchill; Visions of Glory, 1874-1932" by William Manchester. It ended with a quote from Lady Astor to Stalin(!!!) when he asked about politicians in England. She said "Chamberlain is the coming man." What about Churchill?" asked Stalin. "Churchill? Oh, he's finished!" Ha! Shows what she knew about politics! Now I have to find the next volume. I paid $3.00 for this one at a thrift store, I hope I can do as well for volume 2!
I want to learn how to put a cute fairy in myyyyyy posts! I so do not have the hang of the smilie thing. (Loser!)

Hmm I like purples and greens.

2. Any colors you really detest? (That'd make it non-essential in a hurry,

Nope, I like all colors.

3. I'm really into recycling knits. What if I make it out of sweater felt?

Sounds like a neat idea. WHy not! Maybe I should add another category?

4. For most impressive embroidery, is that machine or hand
embroidery? (Hint, hint, maybe you'll have one of each...) Because, how
can hand embroidery compete against a computerized embroidery
machine? Well, OK, except for the Wisteria Soaker... :)

Hm... hadn't thought about that either. I was thinking hand but I might need another another category.

5. What is your favorite kind of candy?

Chocolate.

Okay now that my 'prototype' is almost complete....I have a couple of questions...

this is what happens when one knits first and reads the rules later.....

the bag I have before me is made from stash yarn in a very top secret color (meaing I don't remember- this one is probably grape kool aid...but is probably too big to be the finished product)

How precise do you want information about amount of yarn used? Since i was using stash yarn I didn't pay attention.....I could weigh it- but crap I wanted to felt it tonight so that I could decide how to tweek the pattern for my next attempt.....

This is a highly complicated process - even w/out short rows....Hmm, maybe there is a place for those in my next attempt....?

pamelamama
09-18-2005, 07:51 PM
be precise enough that someone who wanted to make the pattern could know how much yarn she needed to procure!!

botannie

LOL, I might as well have. No, I used this ghastly rust colored yarn (tigerlily my arse) :rolleyes paired with brown and cream. I thought it might work. Nope, nada, uh-uh. Not workin for me.

I could always use a bag for my kitchen sink. There ain't nothin wrong with that.

Have to brag, mine's cute as heck!!! Its made from "somebody else already knitted it" and all I did was felt it stuff, so I have no idea what to do for a pattern. It'd be a sewing pattern, which isn't very good for knitters, as I've seen a few of you say you don't even want to sew on a size tag or a label, LOL!
So, I guess I'll be happy if you just love it to pieces.

I hope the post office is moving along quickly...oh crud...is Monday a postal holiday? I wasn't figuring that in....Oh I guess I will just have to make double time to get it to the post office tonight...Hopefully our automated meter works.....

I am willing to accept multiple prizes...and I promise IF I win anything to keep my acceptance speech short. (LOL! Right now I would just settle for getting the thing done and having someone WANT to use it)

OK, here's where I am:
#1- Made out of Pre-knitted, felted woolen fabric- Customized for PamelitaMamacita of Wooly Wonder Fame. Done. But, it doesn't really fit the "pattern" part of the contest gudelines, since I started with a pattern I made by drawing the basic measurements of the "old" purse on graph paper, and then winging it. I've not really seen many patterns that have the instruction:

"Then just wing it."

Although, if we all decide this is a valid istruction, probably most of you
could put yours in the mail TODAY! ROTFLMBO!!!

#2- Made out of Pre-knitted, felted woolen fabric- Customized for Marnie of Curly Purly Fame. Shaped like a giant French Cruller. Just kidding, hehehe, although that WOULD be a fairly easy pattern to knit and then felt, right? About 50% done, could be finished by Sunday night. If #3 doesn't get in the way. The designing is all done, I just have to do the construction part.

#3- Actual knitted and felted purse or purse-like object for the pattern contest, made with real, live yarn from a skein with a label. (Most of my yarn doesn't have labels, so the pattern would say, Materials: 5 oz. ball of thick and thin yarn from a (brand) sweater.) I had it all knit, but the wings got in the way. That sounds like a song lyric, doesn't it??? "Ev'ry time I tried to write it, the wings got in the way..." Weeeeelllllll, apparently I lost track of or ignored where the middle was, so I ended up with something that kind of looked like a soaker for Picasso's baby. Like the lumps for the butt cheeks were... cubist. And, I'm being kind to myself here... So, I started over from the bottom, thinking it might make it easier to keep track of what the heck I'm doing, but I'm really still not too sure. I guess the good news is that I really got the hang of Kitchenering finishing the first one, so perhaps I **could** knit the bottom, and then graft it to the old top, and save some knitting time. Because unlike you knitting wizards, I am a "not so fast there, missy!" kind of knitter. Plus I get either distracted or bored, and then its like getting out of the La Brea Tar Pits to finish whatever it is. and I will **definitely*** be emailing in my pattern. After I get done "phoning it in", hahaha. Such a comedian...

I'll try to figure out how to post a picture of the current state of the project, which could be titled "What Tangled Webs We Weave..." IF I can figure out how to do it.

As Madeline says, "That's all there is, there is no more."

#3 sounds like mine?

Hmmm.....just out of washer after 27 minutes worth of felting...It is DONE...I have declared the felting complete.....though one can still see the stitches...I think it will be 'felted light'...or 'felted latte' (guess what color it is..)

Oh and I still need a name...the orginal name was too long....Can't we just have another contest to name the pattern?

Mine is finished. I could add a button to close the flap, but as it really needs to go in the mail, I think I'm going to forgo. Plus, for the past week I've basically been a single parent to the girls because Nick is working full time at his job, and then putting in another 7 or so hours at our new house. My buttons are packed and I don't think I'm going to make it to the store to get more. I will have to priority mail and drop in the box tomorrow.

Mine is cotton which now that I have it done, I'm not thrilled about - it's a bit floppy for my taste. However, I think this design in a more stable fiber would be perfect. I don't have time to reknit for Pammy though....Sorry, Miss Pamela!

I'm pretty sure that I will email you my pattern instructions. They're all typed up, I just have to find some time for a clean, hand-drawn schematic. Let's just say my original sketches are *not* to scale! lol!

pmcgary
10-08-2005, 02:51 PM
Okay, the schematic is going to be a problem for me...how does one do that
'technically' I mean? Do you draw and scan? If so that may be a problem for me as I don't have access to a scanner...

You can use the program Paint, if you have it. The trick is to use shift when you are using the line tool, and it will make it stay either horizontal, vertical or 45 degree angle, depending. If you use it while drawing a square, or circle, it will make it stay a square instead of allowing it to go to a rectangle. With the circle, it stays circular instead of becoming an oval.

Another trick I stumbled on is that when you use the selection tool (the dotted box) you will notice two little icons on the bottom of the tool box. The subtle difference is that one has a white background in the dotted box, because it automatically fills around the item you have cut from a white background with white. The other shows the yellow and black background colors showing through in the selection, because it gives a see-through background to your selection. This is sometimes handy when doing things like putting dimensions on drawings, when you DON'T want your lines messed with.

Also, its sometimes handy to use the magnifying glass tool to blow up the drawing, so you can get rid of wayward particles in the drawing. OK, so maybe I'm more anal than necessary, and you will never use it, hahaha.

Patti
PS, after I unraveled part of picasso, I found that it was only the very end and closure that was wacking it out, so I can just finish the original one, then puzzle out the pattern. Thank heavens!!!

Well I should here from my pattern formatter tomorrow - if he can't help me with the schematic I may just have to do that...
The bag is still drying....I hope it makes it there in time.....

Say, Pamela..what time does your mail arrive?

I am beginning to see that there are 2 categories here: Those who like to create, and those who like to document it, and make a pettern so others can do the same. And I'm beginning to see which category I am in... I always had a lot of respect for pattern makers, but I am almost at the toe-licking, worshipping stage. This is torture... Just wanted to whine, hehehe.

I find that what is hard for me to do when writing my pattern (which is by no means 'good') is trying to figure out who my audience is....

If I assume it is beginning knitter I will end up with a 12 page document......
If I assume it is a seasoned knitter I get a page......(and lots of 'feel free to adjust to meet your needs)

The actual pattern is currently 3 pages long and my Db and Dm are polishing it and looking to see if it makes one little bit of sense.....

Meanwhile I am going to mail the bag and cross my fingers hoping that Columbus doesnt knock me out of the running for some prize.

Pam, I dont' have too many!! Hopefully y'all didn't give up!! There's still time to get it done and get it in. I hope I don't have to give back the prizes ... Come on gals!

Ok. I read this post last night at 11:00PM. It made me decide to enter the contest! :) I figured that I might have a chance if there aren't many other contestants! ;)

So, like any obsessive-compulsive knitter I started knitting and didn't stop until I had the body of my bag done, 2:30AM! Then I made all the finishing touches today. It is finally finished! I just typed up my "pattern". I'm not so sure it's complete, but it's the best I can do since this is the very first pattern I've ever written.

Now I hope I'll be able to get it sent to Pam in time!

Holy cow, your grass is so GREEEEEENNNN!!!!

Mine is not shorties, its a soaker with bun bumps. But, as I am trying to puzzle out what I knit so I can write a pattern, I realize that AH HA! short rows are usually done in repeats of a set. Like, a long and 2 shorts, repeat 3 times or whatever. Oh, no, that would be too simple. Mine are like a Sunday "Family Circle, where Jeffy is chasing the dog all over the neighborhood. But, the bag is cute!

Must. Go. Knit. Gahhhhh! Luckily Pam is in Seattle (ish) and I am in Sacramento(period) so priority should still make it, and overnighting is the fall back option. Right after punting.

we probably need to cut the grass...but dh decided yesterday would be a good day to install a new front door...Did you know that takes all day and the tools cost as much as the door...

Oh, my bag was going to be named "But no Short Rows" The real trick with mine was getting the ratio between the body and legs.....I sent Pamela a post of my first attempt at this which was REALLY funny....It was HUGE.

I can't wait to see your bun bumps...Is that going to be its name?

That's adorable Pam!

Thanks. I still have a few things I would change if I were going to do another one - but I think it is more fun than anything else.

In case anyone is wondering it is dyed with coffee. I decided and essentials bag was likely to get Starbucks spilled on it at some point - so rather than cry over spilt coffee on the bag-----stain it before it gets used!

I have a couple of failed attpmpts too...One is going to be the bag I use....it is purple and green. I just need to figure out how I want to close it. I think it will be my 'toss' in the knitting bag to hold stuff when I don't carry my wallet thing.

My pattern is being proofed and having the pictures dropped into it. I can't wait to see what it looks like....

All right - true confessions here...I want to include a few pictures with my pattern and I haven't a clue how to do that....SOOOO....

My brother agreed to do the lay out for me (I have to pay him $1 IF I win)

My mom is proofreading it for me....

I pretty much followed the format of others...Not a whole lot original here.

Well gauge and my wording on things...

Hmmm. I like the coffee idea, but shouldn't it be blotchier, hahaha! Sunday I ended up with a big ice cream streak right down the front of my T-shirt, dead center on the cleavage. Or, as a friend of mine at work would say, well, where you cleavage would be if you had on your good bra and the girls are reaching their true potential. Guess who's young and has not given birth or breast fed yet, LOL...

Sunday morning I realized that I had forgotten to put my bike in the garage, and the second one in like, 6 weeks had gotten stolen from in front of my garage door. complete with trailer hitch from the Netherlands, sob. I must have eaten a quart of ice cream that day, in between sobs and despair attacks. So, not much knitting got done. And yesterday was replace the bike day, because I ride it to work, and everything else, except for the morning journey to school. Last night I realized after taking all day Saturday to try to get the pattern somehow writte down that it would ***NEVER*** be unconfusing, since it was really free-form knitting, so I frogged it to the beginning of the short rows, and I am doing them in sets. So, I'll be going now. I decided instead of felting it in th ewasher, I'll do what I did with the swatch, and felt it at work, where there is a never ending supply of hot water, ice water, and Hey! I can dry it under the glo rays while I'm working! Hopefully it won't come to Pam smelling like our arch-nemesis, scampi sauce, AKA garlic butter. LMBO. Lest any of you worry about sanitation issues, I'll put it under the spare set we always have heated up, but never use, unless it gets really busy. Which is why we have them on all the time, because no one ever checks to see if they are on, they just shove trays of chow over there. And we find out they are off when we slide the trays out to take them to soimeone and hmmm, this seems, cool.... Uh, oh.... And it is never at a convenient time, nor for understanding people concerned with energy conservation.
