So I am taking a stab at this crochet thing and have a question. When I am putting the hook through the work for sc do I slip the hook under both sections of the V or just the back one? I looked on stitchguide.com and the pic there shows it going through just the back one but my piece so far looks nothing like the pic of the soaker http://www.angelfire.com/biz/mothershelpinghands/crochet.html I am wondering if it is because of where I am slipping the needle in.
My work also seems sort of holey. Should I switch to a smaller hook or is this normal for crochet? It seems to put a lot of yarn down but there are small spaces where I can see through it.
Thanks :)

I put it under both sections of the V, I think that going through just the back loop produces a different stitch. FWIW, the pattern you are using is done on a fairly large hook so it will be kind of holey, but I've found that since the stitches are so "thick" it keeps the diaper away from the outside so it doesn't really wick through. HTH :)

yes - for regular crochet you go through both -- the pattern will say front loop only or back loop only to create a different stitch!

I'm confused - anyone have a pic or can direct me to a pic of what you mean by putting it under both loops?

in second pic you can barely see that the hook goes under both loops.
http://crochet.about.com/library/blbackfrontloop.htm
shows doing back loop only.

Thanks ladies. I tried it with both loops and it makes much more sense now. My work looks like the pic now :) I hope to have this done soon so I can try it on her.
