No way to make soakers without plastic yarn. :( And cotton and rayon yarn are neato and all, but vegan natural fibers are hard to find, expensive and don't knit up nicely like other fibers. Does anyone have any ideas for non-animal yarns that are fun to work with?

I've been working w/ some Bamboo yarn. It knits up beautifully and is rather fun to work with. The texture is really interesting - it's pliable and soft but sturdy. It's supposed to be have many of the same properties of wool - absorbant, anti-bacterial, etc. I was considering making a soaker out of the yarn, but if you get to it first, let us know how it works!

I've been working w/ some Bamboo yarn.

i saw that at my LYS. the yarn lady said that being a plant fiber it was sini.ar to rayon, and therefore would definitely wick. she went as far as suggesting it would be better for a doubler/insert than a soaker.

if you make a soaker from it i'd be very interested to hear how it goes. not that i doubt my yarn lady, but, you know...

the bamboo yarn comes from the same company that I liked to with the soy silk, so you can order both and report back.

FWIW, I don't think the bamboo would work for a soaker, I know there's amama who uses bamboo fabric for diapers (absorbent part) so I can't imagine that it would work as a soaker.

Once i get good at knitting I want to try naturally waterproofing a non waterproof yarn, like possibly with a thin layer of wax or something like that.

Thank you so much for the soy silk and bamboo yarm recs. I love you guys. I have to bow to the awesome knowledge of experience.

Maybe it doesn't suck so bad to be a vegan knitter, I get to use yarns a lot of ppl haven't ever tried before. Yay! This made my day!! Now I'm off to ebay to try to win a cheap lot of needles, since I only have 4 or 5 sets.

There's even corn silk! Now I have to sell my soul to buy some freak fiber yarns. Soy silk is $50 a pound! :faint Considering they get it from tofu waste, I think they should sell it to me for less since I consume so much tofu already.

What kind of waste do they get from Tofu? Is it the noses and the tails of the Great Tofu Beast? Kind of like :spam

I crack myself up.

My mom just bought some more Bamboo yarn for me yesterday. She specifically said I'm to use it to make something for *me*. :wowza While I'm not convinced that it would work as a soaker, I *know* that it will make an awesome tank top or halter! :pink
