What is the best way to make black yarn? I'm not set up to do acid dyes yet... can Kool-Aid make black? I have a customer who wants bee embellishments.

TIA!

I've never done it successfully...I'd suggest buying some acid dye or pick up a small hank/skein of black wool.

Yeah, I figured. I can only make black when I meant to make purple, lol. I ordered some and a few pairs of Addi Turbos while I was at it, lol.

I've been considering buying black wool yarn & then overdying it for a deeper color, but haven't actualy done it yet.

Yeah I would just buy black yarn, it would probably be easier and you would be assured of the results!

Yeah, less stress!

Oh, and I ordered it from Yarware where the Addi Turbos are on sale!

I have done black with some success. I have an all black soaker that is waiting for an embellishment of some sort.

I used Wilton's black.....be aware it takes A LOT of dye.....I used probably 3/4 of a jar and did enough black for one small pair of shorts. It also needs a lot of time......I use the slow cooker method...I don't know if one of the other methods would work better or not. If you goof it it ends up a navy blue or dark purple....I just kept putting it back in with more dye as needed.....

Probably not worth the bother if you can find a yarn in black to purchase that will work for you.

I"d just buy natural black b/c then you wouldn't have the risk of it bleeding.

There is. It varies lot to lot, but I just got some REALLY black stuff, although it always has some grey hairs mixed in ;) My last lot is almost black but closer to a VERY deep chocolate brown.

Here's the natural black in action

I was just going to say what Jess said..its not a 'true black" but rather a brown with bits of gray in it.
I did felted slippers for my DH with it..he was bummed at first because he wanted *black* but oh well..hes learned to live with brown ;) The stuff I had was a bit darker than chocolate brown...maybe semi sweet chocolate brown ;)

Yup, that's the stuff from my first order. This second shipment I got yesterday is definitely black with some grey in it.
