So here I am knitting up a swatch of super soft and kinda fluffy Targhee in the most awesomest ever colorway (thank you Yarndealer Jess) and I'm wondering what needle sizes everybody uses for what yarn and what their gauge is. Anybody who is anybody does a 5" gauge swatch right? ;) So I'm going to post my only-interesting-to-soaker-knitters (and possibly only interesting to me) stuff here.

BFL (Nada's) - 'er measured on a pair of PP, cause I unravelled my swatch

20 sts and 27 rows in 4" using size 7 needles

2ply Targhee (Yarndealer)

18 sts and 29 rows on size 7 needles

I also get five stitches per inch on BFL on sevens. :thumb

But I get 4 stitches per inch using nines with BFL and that gives a nice soft fabric!

Off the top of my head, I know I get 5 stitches per inch on 7's using HPY worsted merino, and 4 on 8's in LTK 2 ply.

I'm almost always on 7's or 8's, I need to get new needles so I can have more than 1 WIP at the same time.

I'm one of those weirdos who knits everything up at the same gauge. Everything I knit on my 8's comes to 4.5 st/in. I've *almost* given up gauge swatches :bag

I'm Ms. Loose knitter.

For BFL, I get 4.5 st/in on 7's, 5 st/in on 5's, and 5.5 st/in on 4's (all of which I've used, but I think I like 5 st/in the best).

For LTK 2ply, I get 4.5 st/in with 6's.
For LTK 3ply, I get 5.5 st/in with 3's.
For Blackberry Ridge, I get 4.5 st/in with 6's.

My so far limited list, for 4 inches square:

Size 8 needles:
Fisherman's yarn: 18 stitches x 22 rows

Size 6 needles:
Peace Fleece: 18 stitches x 28 rows

(I'll add as I play with more yarn... I have to go and get size 5's, and hopefully I'll make gauge for L's new soaker!)

I cannot think of an exception where I have not gotten the stitch count with the recommended needles. I've gotten to where I don't even swatch anymore, which is probably a bad idea, except that I measure my gauge many times through the knitting of an item and I'd rather be making progress on something in hope that I might be able to keep it than to knit something I know is not a part of my final product. However, my row gauge is always off.

Tana- how does your row gauge being "off" affect your knitting?? I was just wondering about this last night... I can make horizontal stitch gauge, but not rows.

Will come back and edit with specifics, but:
Using the LTK soaker pattern, I get gauge:

Using LB Fisherman's on 6s
Using LTK 3 ply on 4s (the difference was a big suprise for me! the yarns don't seem that different?)

2ply targhee on 7s = 4.5-5sts/inch
BFL on 7s = 5sts/inch, on size 8s = 4.5sts/in
PF on 7s = 4.5-5sts/in, on 8s = 4.5sts/in
Cascade Eco on 7s = 5-5.5sts/in

2 ply Targhee(Hillary's)=5sts/in. on 7's
PF=5sts/in. 8's

Can't remember the gauge for the other yarns I've used

Not Tana-
but generally for most patterns row gauge isn't all that important.....for example most of the soaker patterns have you knit for a certain number of inches....Of couse if row gauge is off the amount of yarn you use will likely differ from any guidelines in the pattern....

:bag I NEVER do a swatch - it seems like a colossal waste of time and I have so little time... I knit really tightly, so I tend to go up a size or two to start. If the project turns out wonky (this happens alot) I just adjust next time.

Hmmm.. sounds like it actually would be less trouble to do a swatch. I think it's a mental thing...

OK, I was thinking about this post last night and I sound like a big fat ....know-it-all. You ladies have the most perfect knitting I have ever seen, mine is CRAP compared to yours. I should try and be more like you, not so frigging lazy!!!
