Help me! I just got my *NEW* swift in the mail and had to try it out. I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to keep the yarn on there! It just keeps slipping off! What am I missing here? If I try to tighten the clamp to open it wider, it pushed the little ball off the top and the whole thing collapses!

What little balL?
I tighten the knob thing up top to make the umbrella widen out .. however, i couldn't get it to go as wide as i wanted to ... so I added a little nut from dh's tool supplies underneat the knob . It gives an extra little bit. I am out of juice in my camera. :( will take apic later if i get some batteries.

Mine looks like this. http://www.yarn-store.com/yarn-winders-and-swifts.html The ball thing on the top was just held on with a dot of glue, it seems? Pops right off :irked

oh mine is not like that. mine has a knob on top that you tighten and it presses the ribs down and out.

Yeah, I bought this one because it said "heavy duty" :irked I wonder if I could just drill a hole down through the ball and into the dowel and screw it on? Arrgh! I was looking forward to using this thing!!!!

If you have to send it back and order another one I got my from joanns with a 50% off coupon.

The only code I have right now is for 40% off though. it's TABTB0725
Mine looks just like Pam's w/ a top finial that screws down to keep the arms extended. The finial doesn't screw down far enough, though. :( The nut is an awesome idea, though! I'm going to have to try it when I get home.
On mine, the bottom segment of each arm where the yarn is held has a small wooden piece that flips out to keep the yarn from slipping out of the V. It's very handy!

I could never figure out how to use those little wood sticky outie parts.
JayMo does your base have a giant metal pin that the top part rests on? What a dangerous looking item that is!
A nut or a few washers stacked does the trick nicely xoxox

The "wood sticky outie parts" have saved my skeins several times! I just make sure the swift is at a lower level than the winder when I'm making yarn cakes, otherwise the yarn might snap on the sticky outie parts. I'm looking forward to trying out the nuts and washers when I get home
And yeah, the pin scares the heck out of me, esp w/ Anwyn running around.
