Tell me about snaps

Have you ever used snaps for knitted or crocheted fabrics? If so, what cap size did you use? Were you able to do something so that the snap wouldn't ruin the fabric?

I did once and was scared each time i used it but they held quite well.
then my mom ended up felting it (like usual) but that actually worked better. to bad ds2 only got to wear it that one time b4 it was felted. I know i have it somewhere i will try to findit and take pics.
but i used size 20 snaps
ummm i think i used patons merino on a size 5 needle
