Today Meredith was wearing her Easy Peasy cardigan (from LTK of course) and we saw an acquaintance. This woman is a knitter and ohhed and ahhed over M's sweater :).

She mentioned that she is starting a knitting group at her church and wanted me to give her a copy of the pattern. I POLITELY explained that it is a copyrighted pattern by a WAHM and I couldn't make her a copy. Well if looks could kill I wouldn't be here.

She stammered that she understood and walked away like I was the rude one.

Some people just don't get it! :irked

Sounds like my MIL. She kept asking for my LTK soaker pattern when I was working one it at her house. She asked me if she could make a copy of it (theres a copier in my FIL's office room). I told her where she could buy it. She gave me her pissy look that she does so well. Well, stupid me, I accidentally forgot the pattern at her house. I have no idea if she saw it or not. Her house is cluttered and I sent DH there the next day to retrieve it. It annoys me to this day.

So now when I go to her house. I bring socks to work on. Theres no copying a pattern that she already owns! So there.

My MIL is a gospel singer. She sells her CD's for just a little over the cost of making them.

A woman came up to her yesterday and told her how much she liked her lastCD and HOW SHE WAS GOING TO BURN A COPY FOR HER PASTOR like it was a great thing she was doing - stealing a copy of a GOSPEL CD.

Do people really think this is okay?! I just wonder if since the advent of VCR we just have gotten so used to this "media sharing" that we think "anything goes"????? No one would think of photocopying a novel to share......(And I am certainly not above scrutiny- I know I have been a bit fast and loose with copyright in the past.)

people absolutely do think it's okay. the concept of something that's played on the radio or published in a book being "owned" by someone is too amorphous (is that a word?) for lots of people to grasp.

like, is it okay to copy a recipe from a book to share? i posted one of my favorites for carrotcake on a site, and felt a bit guilty about it. (made up for it -- in my own mind -- by saying how fab the whole book is & people should buy it.)

if someone offers me a copy of a pattern that's from a book, i'll take it. i know it's not really right, but i guess it doesn't keep me up at night. now, wahm patterns, i buy from the wahms -- the distinction being they're wahms. :)

It is a fine line......I guess I look at the copy from a book this way...I would rather take a copy than borrow the whole book. And I certainly don't want to lend out any of my good knitting books so someone can knit a pattern - so I might be inclined to photocopy that for someone too. (I never get books returned)

I also have a couple of CDs my brother burned for me of various songs...If we lived closer together I would just borrow the dang thing from him. (And I can honestly say I would not buy any of the CDs he had stuff off of.)

I also just find it amazing how casually people - in normal conversation will mention doing something - the story that started this thread.
