WHAT happened? I wanted to get a rainbow color out of one of these, and it all bled together, making this NASTY looking skein... but it is really kinda intriguing. I have some green Lamb's Pride that I think I will be putting with it, and making something out of it. probably a soaker or two, I think. But we will see what it looks like knitted up first. It might just be Jenna's.

yeah umm...btdt ;)
My very first dye attempt I did two hanks. One with blue and red kool aid (cant remember flavors but man did it come out pretty!)
and the second was a hodge podge of colors....EWWW...I was expecting something more bright but the grape turned to brown and well...*hurl* came out sorta fallish but not pretty fallish LOL

i'd say 75% of the time the outcome is a surprise to me.

mostly in a good way. ;)

oddly, even stuff I hate, someone likes.

Yep. Generally I am in love with every skein I dye (I love dyeing) but the first time I tried to make purple I made the horrific mistake of using grape and I made the fugliest yarn on earth.

It is the top left skein.... I think it will look ok when I put it with the green Lamb's Pride that I have, but it just didn't turn out how I wanted. And the red... PINK!

I just dyed up some red for embroidery using procion "carmine red" and OMG did it come out perfect. Very bright but not tomato or fire engine red...just a tad more softness to it but not rosey (does that make sense? LOL)

And Meredith..I think the "accident" looks lovely!

What did you use to get the pink?
I have managed to get a light pink with Wilton's Christmas Red...would like something a bit brighter though...like what you got. Let me know if you remember the "secret" recipe. :pink

The bluey purple one is all Wilton's dyes.... aster mauve is the pinky color, and I really can't remember how I got the purply... I think I just did violet and then I did some royal blue, too... which NEVER remains blue.

For the greeny purple... that is just dyeing one half of an entire Fisherman's wool skein grape and the other half lemon lime. I muted the lemon lime down, though... with some water.

Actually, that pink is Cascade 220. However, I got this pink (it is the larger size ball at the top) http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/1003/mom2pittcrew/inbox1.jpg with Wilton's Christmas Red, red food coloring, and one packet of cherry kool aid. It is all trial and error at my house. I was wanting a true red!!

I have never tried to get a true red...nor have I stumbled on it by chance. Whenever I work to make a light pink dark I end up with an orangey red. I seem to have a problem with yellow undertones with the reds and fisherman's. :hmph:

I've gotten a nice red by using Tropical Punch... I used lots and lots and lots (like 10 packets or something crazy like that)... let it dry and then re-dyed. I find that red takes longer in the microwave too.

I haven't used the red yarn yet for anything, but the water rinsed clear after I dyed it.

You can get a really pretty darker pink with black cherry. Like 2 packets to about 16 oz of water for 1/2 a skein of fisherman's. Once I figure out why I can't import pics from my digi and rememdy the prob I'll post pics.

I can second what PB_and_J said. Not long ago I made DP a twisted-rib watch cap, which he dyed red with tropical punch Kool-Aid(maybe 4 for the hat?). It's a pretty good true red -- very bright, vibrant.

Funny thing is, he was trying for blue! I think the packet itself was predominantly blue, and he read in the ingredients "Blue Dye

They are lovely. I got a true light red out of cherry koolaid, but it was on sport weight yarn.

I have a mistake yarn, was meant to be navy blue, but came out the prettyiest shade of lavendar....

trial and error...this is why I am so afraid to go to dying my own yarn. I have not the time nor the money for this......

Tropical Punch is in a blue package. It should be blue, right?

No, it's a nasty pink that I hate and it made my batch look so gross. I saved it, but it was a learning experience.

Two words: Acid Dyes! Go over to Dharma and get some if you're having trouble with your dye! You'll never regret it. I've been oggling a couple of greens, and I'll start up another coop if there's the interest. It's by far cheaper to split a 8oz container with a couple of people. It drops the per oz price to like half of what they're charging for their 1/2oz size.

The acid dyes come out true. You can get a kettle dyed effect, if you dye in a shallow pan, but if you dye in a pot it will come out very even. Plus you can paint and microwave the stuff too!

I'm up for another order!!! And I would love to split orders....

Wanna do it?

I am going to get a butt load of dyes for my bday (in Oct) but could probably arrange to get them earlier if there is a good dea. ;) What about that other place Theresa mentioned? It seemed like they had better prices than Dharma. ???

I did the math - on the Jaquard dyes in the larger quantities, dharma is cheaper. They have another brand that is cheaper, but only at the 1/2oz size.

My preference is to see if we can get together on ordering the larger size of dye. It's sooo much cheaper! You get 2 or 3 oz of dye for the same price you'd pay for the 1/2 oz size. Some of the more $$$ are a bit more than you'd pay for the 1/2oz size, but it's still a much better deal. I'll go dig up that link. It should be in the old swap thread.......

I would be very interested in a dye co-op. is it still going?

ravingcutie

Well, I can start one up! I'm running out of a couple of greens, and would like to try a red, My favorite color is blue, so maybe I should get some of that, and they have some purple I've been dyeing to try!

Seriously, maybe only need red and the greens. I'll go start a dye coop in the swap area, and we can see what interest their is!

OK This is an insanely newbie question. But if you want red why not just buy red? there are lots of REALLY soft nice yarns you can buy in red. I understand the dying with varigated colors and for different effects but I just don't get it for solid colors.

someone should ask Morwenna about the red. She had a lovely deep red yarn up for custom during the last stocking on Monday
