View Full Version : Pam's looking for buddies on an auction item: soaker-of-the-month

pamelamama
05-06-2005, 09:34 PM
So, the idea is, the winner would get a soaker a month, custom, for a year. It could also be like, "designer's choice" so you take some input from the customer, but the end result is a surprise.

I'm hoping for maybe eleven other wahms to go in on this with me, so we each have to do only one, and not even right NOW, but when your month comes up. You'd sign up for the month and you could give a hint about what you'd be making.

I'm open to any wahms, not just wonderwahms.

Anyone want to join in? I think it could be a big moneymaker! Not a big commitment for you, and a big big prize for the winner.

Come ON!!! Just a SOAKER!!! Not even pants or anything ;)

I'm definitely out for Sept/Oct, probably shouldn't take Aug either in case of an early birthday. I can do June or July, or wait until later next year. :)

Good question. I was thinking it'd be the wahms, hopefully the 'big draw names' wahms, but with twelve slots, we'll probably have room for some amateurs! Are people insulted by that?

I'm not very close with any of the "big name" wahms (Morwenna, Karen, Elizabeth, etc. I'm sure I'm leaving someone out :hmm) but maybe if someone here is they wouldn't mind PM'ing them? I don't think most of them read here every day....

I hesitate to commit to an embellished soaker but I could do a spring "soak-a-delic" tie dye if that would count. Any of the spring months would do. Wow I am impressed that you all can be creative that far in advance lol.

My concern would be that one person could not afford this auction and a number of moms would go in on it which would mean sizing changes. We need to be sure that whoever buys it understands that they have to decide sizing well in advance and give a lot of notice to the next wahm in line so they can get started. I'd want to know asap so I could keep it in mind for when I have spare time ya know?

I'd also like to see a sizable starting bid to discourage "investors" who might buy the lot just for resale. Surely the bidding would go too high for that but the auction should at least start with a reasonable "retail" starting bid.

If you don't get 12 wahms maybe you could do 4 seasons or every other month or something like that?
Hope I don't sound too negative!

How could anyone afford what it's actually worth? It would have to start at $500-$600!! Maybe do two 6 months things or something?

CraftyMommaOf2
05-07-2005, 08:40 AM
Elizabeth, I don't think you're being negative! Realistic :) Ita about the starting price, too. I didn't even think that more than one person would go in on it. :LOL

JustLookin
05-07-2005, 08:42 AM
I was thinking about this also, 12 soakers is a BIG purchase for most. If it seems too big maybe we could split in to 2 auctions or maybe even do seasons. SOTM for a season... then the moms bidding could decide if they want all 4 seasons and bid even higher ;)

ravingcutie
05-07-2005, 08:43 AM
Some people have major $$$ that they spend on diaper auctions. You never know who might pick it up.

I'll take one of the spring months and do Waterlilies. If it's a boy, it might be more "pond" leaning heavily on the greens and blues.

JustLookin
05-07-2005, 08:54 AM
true I have seen some VERY generous moms

Susan_WW
05-07-2005, 09:02 AM
While ITA that we should discourage "investors" from bidding, I think that if we simply put something like "The items from this auction may not be resold for personal gain..." in the auctions then it's bad karma on them if they do so.

This is for charity, and I think if we start out with a really low bid we will generate alot of traffic/hype for all of our auctions.

I know that many of us run our businesses with good business practices in mind, but I think for chairty's sake we should take a "risk" on this one :)

KnitInYourPantsMama
05-07-2005, 10:07 AM
I wasn't thinking we should necessarily discourage investors or outlaw them. I'm just trying to think of how to ensure that the charity gets the max amount. I usually expect charity auctions to earn more money not less than retail so I guess 12 customs would be what - 600-1200 at least ??? maybe more?
yikes. That's a lot of wool but a good value I'm sure in the long run.

I'd rather donate cash than a seriously underpriced soaker ya know? But, I am certainly willing to take a gamble since if it's for charity. Hopefully we will all be surprised and thrilled with the outcome!

So, are all the months filled yet?

05-07-2005, 10:15 AM
Hmmm...I think I agree about dividing it up...maybe a soaker every other month?

Susan_WW
05-07-2005, 10:22 AM
Good points Elizabeth :) Maybe we can encourage people to get together and chip in? (although I know this will create sizing issues, but sizing will be an issue anyway since the baby will grow over the course of the year.) I think that just the idea of a year's worth of popular WAHM soakers is sooo appealling (rather than just a quarter, half year, etc) that people will be willing to bid lots of $$$.

pb_and_j
05-07-2005, 10:23 AM
Good points... I like the idea of having this be divided into 4 "seasons." I think that would make these more affordable to more ppl and would get higher bids in the long run. 4 ppl paying $200 each (for 4 soakers) seems much more likely than 1 person paying $800. Kwim?

Susan_WW
05-07-2005, 10:41 AM
Hmmm...what if we all agreed to do unembellished soakers? Or do you think that would take away from the appeal? That way, the retail value would be a little more realistic (around $600 vs $1000+)?

I guess also a "soaker a season" or a quarter's worth of soakers would also gain alot of attention, but if we only get one or two hyena knitters then how do we decide who goes where? At least if we're all in together then everyone gets fair recognition KWIM?

05-07-2005, 10:46 AM
Good points Susan. I don't know... if we get ppl like Karen and Morwenna then those sets would go for lots I am sure (if Karen and Morwenna even agree to this! Has anyone asked them?). I don't really even know who else is "hyena" besides those 2...

JustLookin
05-07-2005, 10:55 AM
I would say at the moment Morwenna, Karen, Elizabeth and Vanessa are the big auction moms. Every time I see one of their soakers for auction it goes high, whether new from them or used from a customer. I contacted Vanessa but she may not be on for a while.

Susan_WW
05-07-2005, 11:11 AM
Is there a way to do dutch auctions at wahmchicks? Then you can just list them all at once and the highest bidder gets thier choice of seasons, then second highest picks their choice, etc? I'm just suggesting that it would posibly be easier that way :)

baabaasheeshee
05-07-2005, 11:17 AM
Maybe I am late to get in on the discussion, but is it really an issue If A few mamas split the auction?

I think it would totally drive the price up, if several mamas went in together, and liek someone already mentioned. because it is a full year, sizing will be ab issue anyway.

oh and I really want to do an embellish soaker...I have it already planned out in my mind:LOL

CraftyMommaOf2

MosaicMoonMama
05-07-2005, 02:05 PM
OK, just saw this. I think it's a great idea, but like Elizabeth am worried that the charity might not get maximum $$ this way. If one of our soakers could go for $100-$500 (and I am not bragging here, but a VERY generous mama did bid $500 for a custom soaker from me for charity before and I know Elizabeth and Karen's charity customs go for amazing amounts as well) are we really going to get $1200-$6000 for 12 soakers?

I really want to help, so whoever ends up in charge, please email me if I don't respond here mmoon@mind.net --I am willing to do whatever y'all want me to do!

We JUST sold our house and have to be out by the 31st and I so wanted to get through my custom list before we have to move :( We have another house we have to sell (huge long story there, but we have to sell it now, it was rented and the renters took off and left us kind of in the lurch) so I can't buy something else until that is sold. Soooo, we will be living with my mom temporarily and she has a brand-new house with a WHITE kitchen. I may try to set something up in the garage for dyeing but what I am trying to say is that life is going to be unpredictable for the near future.

But, YES, I am definitely up for 1 custom soaker, later that sooner though so I can make it through my list first! That's the reason I haven't done any totally custom-for-charity auctions for a long time, my long, long customs list.

But do count me in. If mmoon doesn't work, I have email at my mom's ninane@earthlink.net

Thanks for wanting to include me!

averymybaby
05-07-2005, 02:35 PM

05-07-2005, 02:59 PM
Ok, so now I 'm a little stuck as to what we ought to do. Thoughts...

There's nothing stopping individual soaker mamas from running an auction for a single soaker.

I think several bidder mamas getting together on the package for the year would be ok by me!

Here's the lineup so far:

The lineup:

Summer:
June -- Wonderful Woolies, Susan -- "Nature Walk" (embellished)
July -- Bailey's Britches and More, Danica "Hot, Hot, Hot!"
August -- The Cushie Tushie, Julie -- "Ripe Summer Peaches"

Fall:
September -- Curlypurly, Marnie -- "Autumn"
October
November -- Rumpknits, Cynthia -- "Cornucopia"

Winter:
December
January -- BaaBaaSheeShee, Vanessa -- "Let it S now!" (embellished)
February -- Sit On Knits, Kim -- "Valentines Baby"

Spring:
March
April
May -- Bungalow Buns, Katie -- "Water Lilies" (small embellishment)

We can easily break it up into seasons. Soaker-a-Month for a Season. That will make it more possible for individuals to get involved, and more likely that they can pay a whole lot. Who has a thousand dollars for charity? It'd have to be a group of bidders. Right?

Elizabeth, Morwenna and Karen have all said they'd like to get involved. Maybe one for Fall, one for Winter, one for Spring? Splitting them up seems wise.

Is it not as much fun since the prize is not so huge? Was the cool thing about it that people got a whole stinking lot if they won?? LOL

Ok, I'm working on the fine print.

SO that is four different auctions so far:

Maybe for the wahms who dont make it into the lineup, we can set up another auction with three of you, one soaker a month for a season. No reason to not use everyone.

SO go ahead and tell me your month and your theme, and we'll keep making seasonal surprises.

pamelamama
05-07-2005, 03:23 PM
Fine Print:

1. Winning bidder will receive three soakers, one per month, as described in the auction.
2. In order for you to receive your soaker in a timely manner, you must post your accurate measurements here: http://woolywonder.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=54426. Measurements must be posted one month prior to expected receipt of the soaker.
3. You may bid as a group for this auction. Items are transferrable as gifts, however, resale for profit is violates the intention of this charitable mission and is strongly discouraged.

What else?

I sent an email to Morwenna asking if she'd maybe take Fall I, October, maybe halloween theme. She does those black colors, seemed a good match to me?

So if we get Elizabeth/Karen into Winter/Spring I think we'll be all set!

Get me those themes so we can fill the gaps. And we can place additional seasons if necessary. I need two more knitters in Fall II.

Going out for dinner. Will make up the auction templates tonight. If you post your logos in this thread, I can stick them into the templates for your season.

How about each auction is for the upcoming season. So each winner gets 4 soakers for teh next 4 months (not 6 or 9 months from now).

I agree with this - instead, could you have it where you get 1 soaker each season i.e., June, September, December, March. That way, you had a new soaker to look forward to every three months.

I'm obviously not one of the knitters offering up their work, but I would definitely be interested on bidding on something where I was getting a custom soaker every three months!

Hopefully this doesn't muddy the waters too much!

I hope the customers can figure this out lol
I just can't afford to offer "you pick all" customs for charity auctions so I decided a while back that my standard charity item would be either wetbags or got cloth/wool soakers as I can get them done in a set amount of time. For this auction I will do a tiedye if that counts as embellished and would be a good spring item.
Pamela you can put me down for one soaker next spring whichever you think would be more marketable.

If you think that's not enough embellishment to keep with the theme then perhaps I can contribute something to the next FAA event.

I like the idea of splitting it up and think it would be a real thrill to get a soaker a season esp if the themes were sort of a surprise.

I also like the idea of selling a large group of plain unembellished soakers from 3 or 4 dozen wahms sort of a "sampler pack" but perhaps that would be better done with already knit soakers so we'd need to plan in advance.

uh, I don't have a logo. how embarrassing, and my hubby is a graphic artist.. :bag

I'd love to help if there is still time. I just noticed that the auctions
have already started, but if there's any chance of a 8th group of
knitters joining or one of the mamas needs to cancel, I'd be more
than happy to work on a soaker!

so Ill write her back that we have another group and if no one else wants to join I can do another auction for either winter or spring.
