View Full Version : Raising money for the 3-Day - expanding our original plan?

This weekend dh and I got together with Steve and Shelley. Shelley is the breast cancer survivor I made the Boobie scarf for. :) (btw- She is a member of the group BAYS (Bay Area Young Survivors) and they actually use the title "living with the ambiguous title of survivor." A lot of women are "survivors" and are checked every 3 months, but still end up with mestastisized cancer. They live in fear. :(
We talked a lot about the 3-Day, and the Fiber Arts Avengers, and it turns out she has been doing the 3-Day every year since being diagnosed. She walks with a team in Michigan (where she is from). She always throws a fundraiser called "Beer for Boobs." :) She also received a whole box of calendars from an artist who turns the breasts of "survivors" into art! I am hoping to sell/auction some through Fiber Arts Avengers.
Anyway, my point is that once she raises $2100 for her walk, she immediately starts funneling the money into another walker who hasn't hit the mark yet. She loves going to the walk and seeing people lining up with checks to hand to those who haven't hit the $2100 mark yet. :)
It seems like we can kick butt in the same way! All the money goes to the same place, whether we are sponsoring one walker or three! Perhaps once we get Jesse the $400+ she needs to participate in the walk, we can sponsor another walker to $2100.

What do you all think?

I think it's a fantastic idea! Let's do it! Then we can form a true 3-Day team and call it the FAA--maybe someday there will be FAA teams all over the country, sponsored by us!

so, how do we find ppl that need money?

mamapez

Awesome! I have sent an email to Shelley letting her know you are all excited to help. :) I will bet she knows a million people trying to raise money. We can get her efforts going once Jesse is set and then get more names from her to keep going! Maybe our goal should be # of walkers sponsored. :bigups:

ooooo, there's an idea! how many ppl do you think we can sponsor?

mamapez

My instinct is to say 3...one for each auction. :D Or...we can raise money for a bunch of people as a way to boost them... :hmm

Ok, so should I try and come up with the last bit on my own or are you guys in on helping me get to my minimum--either way is fine but I need to know so I can plan.

Thanks.

Also, I'll be able to find out walkers who might need help, too.

Of course I am totally in for you Jesse! I think all of us are. That's the main reason we started this, right?

Susan_WW

Jesse, we started this to help you so we will be helping you get to the minimum first :bighug

Then we can share whatever goes over the minimum with whoever needs help :bigups:

Jesse, of course we will get you to your minimum first, silly! :mwah

I heard back from Shell. Here is a letter she put together for the 3-Day: http://www.swappez.com/html/TheAmbiguity.pdf

Here is the email she sent me in reply to our eagerness to help: :pink
That is so awesome! :O) Thank you!!! :O)

Here is my mom's URL:

I'm not too far off from my goal, and would like to
get my mom there. On May 6th, I'm flying back to
Michigan for a fund raiser that my girlfriend Mary is
putting together. It's really going to be awesome.
I'll have to send the evite to you and if any of the
ladies that are on your forum live in the West
Michigan area maybe they'd like to come. The lady who
is giving us the calendars is going to be there.
Cool! :O)

My mom's name is: Jeanine Sikkema if people just want
to go to:

www.3day.org

Then they can just click on donate, type in her first
and last name, and then scroll down and click on her
name when it pops up. :O)

I've attached a letter I sent out to different people
that I'm asking to donate. It has some amazing
pictures of the young women in my group BAYS = Bay
Area Young Survivors. Feel free to forward it to your
group. :O)

Thank you so much Amy! :O)

Here is the web page of the calendar I mentioned earlier: http://www.livingbreast.com/assembled/home.html

eta: Click on the models link to see the works. :)

Shell got a box of these from the artist, so it is 100% donation to the cause. I will donate shipping. I would like to auction these through FAA, if that is cool...

Say if we do help other walkers ---- are we going to see if they are "crafters" too? I think it would be nice if we can keep the fibrer arts theme going with the walkers we support......

I think it is a great idea, to support other walkers after we get Jesse to her goal.

YAY FAA!!!

The way I look at it, *we* are the fiber arts avengers. :) We don't require anyone participating by purchasing our auctions to be crafty, so I don't see why the walkers would have to be. However, I will email Shell and ask her if she and/or her mother are crocheters/knitters/sewers/cross-stitchers/etc. :D

This is a very nice idea. We'd have to iron out the logistics of donating to another fund once we've got Jesse's all finished.

I'm a little nervous because we've kind of built this around Jesse's efforts in the walk, but Pezzy, if we collect over our required amount it would surely be nice to help another walker qualify. So, I'm thinking it's a nice idea, but a little nervous about the logistics.

I love the calendars, and think you should totally auction them, as long as that is legal!

Hmmm... I don't know why auctioning the calendars would be illegal...what would I need to do to confirm that?

The way I would make the switch is to designate enough auctions to Jesse that the starting prices would add up to 75% of what she has left to cover. If for some reason the auctions don't end with 100% or more for her fund, we can always make up for it at the third auction. :) Then we could designate the rest of the auctions to be for the next walker on the list.

I have a Remembrance hat knit up, and will have four calendars that I would love to auction for Shell's mom. :inlove:
