View Full Version : Using a swift

I saw someone's pics of 1 skein of yarn in different forms. 1) just dyed, 2) wound in a ball and 3) put back into a skein in a different pattern to create nice variegation. Can someone please explain how you get number 3? I'm supposing you need to wind a ball, then you transfer it back onto a swift right? If so, how can you do that? Is it as manual a process as I'm envisioning since a swift has no "turning" mechanism right? Or at least the one I had (which has since been returned).

Thanks!!!

I think that technically you're supposed to use a skein winder, but I just use my swift and spin it from the top :)

I use the niddy noddy thing. I was amazed by the difference between the dyed skein and then the "rewound" skein. I've grown to love lots of yarn that I disliked in the initial dyed skein.

Swifts are supposed to turn. You put your skein on them and they turn as you wind from them.

A niddy noddy is an elongated H shaped piece of wood. The ends twist in opposite directions so that you go up and over one end, down and under, up and over, etc until you have the skein wound around it. You pull off the yarn and Wahlah! A skein.
