I went fabric shopping today and I found a couple of really cute prints that I want to use to make Nicole matching dresses and diaper covers. But since I've never made a diaper cover before I have no idea where to start. I'm guessing I need to get PUL to make them waterproof, right? Do I need 1 mil or 2 mil? Is there a certain type of PUL I should be using? Should I sandwich the PUL between fabrics or should the PUL be touching the diaper directly? I want to use a cotton print for the outside, would that be OK? I'll be sewing these on a regular sewing maching, so they will be turned & topstitched. Do I need a special thread so they won't wick?
Also, any recommedations on where to buy the PUL?
Sorry for so many questions. I really apprecaiate the help :)

well, there are diy coops where you could send in your cute fabric to have it laminated. takes awhile. you can just get pul. 1 mil is just thinner than 2 mil, so it depends on how heavy/hard a wetter she is. also, make sure you get a color that isn't gonna show thru your fabric. i don't like pul touching my boys. well, i don't really like pul period anymore, but i only have stuff that has fleece or suedecloth touching them. kwim? is this even helping? :LOL

Thanks Danica, you have helped quite a bit :)
Has anyone tried ProCare from Wazoodle?

It seems like a good price considering it is 72" wide. I'm wondering how well it works?

I have used both 1 mil and 2 mil PUL successfully. I don't recommend having your prints laminated. In my experience, just layering the print on top of the PUL worked better (less wicking). PUL touching the diaper directly, won't hurt anything - you can use something soft on the underside if you want. You definitely want polyester thread for sewing (doesn't wick).
I really like the prints and made most of Andrew's diapers that way. No matter which way you go, however, the wicking eventually becomes a problem. The latest batch I made him are all solid color PUL. To keep things cute, I send them out to Christy at FussyButts to embroider for me. :)
My cute prints I use for straight diapers.
There is a good co-op for them...lemme see if I can find her again (her name is Vicky, but I'm blanking on the co-op name).
I hope that helps.

I have heard good things about procare, but never tried it myself. :)

I have some procare but haven't sewn with it. It's interesting fabric. Seems very sturdy. I have wetbags made from it that have held up well.
You can try some of the waterproofing sprays for the outer prints if wicking becomes a problem. I've also heard to rub the edges of the cover with a dryer sheet?

pul touching my boys' skin breaks them out. we have MAJOR sensitive skin here. ;)

Thanks so much mamas!!!
One more question, what types of fabric can I successfuly use for the inside of the cover if I don't want the PUL touching the diaper? I bought some really nice cotton velour, but I would assume that would get wet, right? I don't really like fleece too much. How about suedecloth?
Thanks again :)
