View Full Version : Pull-up style diapers?

I've been having a really tough time getting my dd to wear diapers lately. As soon as I get the diaper off she runs around and won't let me put on a new one. I've mainly used prefolds (which take the longest to put on) and a few fitteds, but she fights me on all of them. The only thing that I've found that she won't fight about is cotton pull on training underwear. The only problem is that if she poops, it's a pain to get them off. Plus they don't hold much so I'm changing her constatnly and we can't use them if we go out.
I can't really afford to buy anything right now (plus I'm hoping dd will be potty learned within the next 6 months - she's starting to show signs of readiness) but I was wondering if anyone has sewn a pull up style diaper that can be opened on the sides - similar to the disposable pullups? Or even if there is something for sale that exists just so I can get some ideas.
Thanks :)

i sometimes use side-snapping fitteds as pullups. (we have mostly Celestial Baby which work really well. Righteous Baby FLAGs don't work as well).
sometimes i need to tighten a waist snap once it's pulled up but that's easier to do than the whole change sometimes..
what works best of all, however, is fancy fitteds and letting maya pick one. she'll pick a diaper out of the drawer then drop to the floor and fling her legs up over her head. love those prints!

www.darlingdiapers.com has a potty pants pattern for $7, lots of people love them. I don't know of any for sale, though... since I've never bought any. I did just buy this pattern though, so as soon as she emails it and I get one made I will try and remember to LYK how it is. :LOL LIke that does much good.

Thanks Marnie. The only thing is that most of my fitteds have some sort of snap in or lay in soaker and it can't really be pulled up without messing up the soaker.
Davina, I just looked at the darling diapers pattern and it looks adorable. I love the fact that its t&t, no serger required! Let me know how it works out for you and I may just have to buy it ;)

mine are all snap or lay in. i just stick a finger in and hold the soaker in place while i pull it up.

I just made a bunch for Andrew, because we have the same problem with the diaper changing fights.
I used the New Conception training pants pattern. I made some waterproof and some not. The pattern allows for seams like underwear, or velcro side closures. I used snaps for the side closures. Two on each side (one on top at the waist, and one underneath just above the legs). I also left the back open so I can add additional stuffing if needed, since Andrew doesn't appear to be anywhere near potty learning. :) Her patterns usually have directions for both t&t and serging, so you have a choice.

Susan,
Before Lillie was potty trained I made some pull on training pants from the larger prefolds.
I used a Kwik Sew panty pattern, taped all of the pieces together so it was just one piece. It was pretty much just cutting the legs holes out of the prefold. I seamed the sides and used lingerie elastic at the waist and legs. Super easy.
For side snaps, bind or make some type of facing for the sides and apply snaps. I think twill tape would work well for that and it would give the snaps some extra support.

Amy, thanks for the website! I'll definitely check it out :)
Karen, I think that's a fantastic idea! I don't have a snap press but I defintely think the snap tape would work :)

i second new conceptions for patterns. i have the poo pocket pattern and i love it! they do all have t&t instructions, is my understanding. if you wanna go really easy, buy some training panties in one to two sizes too big, cut down the sides, attach snaps/aplix and sew in a doubler. works great. not terribly pretty, but easy.

Karen, that is exactly what I was thinking although I had no idea how one would actually do it! Thanks for the great idea. James is only 1 but I swear diaper time is soo frustrating. I've been known to snag the sposie at 2am to avoid the fight. :bag

I got the DD potty pants pattern and have looked it over. Looks very easy. You can make it all absorbant, or AIO style. Side snap or applix or sewn like undies. :) It's made for sewing machine, but has tips for serger, too. I can't wait to make some for Brody.
Oh, and for $7!!!

OK I bought the darling diapers potty pants pattern :) I was just playing around with the fabric and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do it on my own. The only training pants I have right now are made out of t-shirt knit type fabric, but all the fabric/diapers I have are woven, so I couldn't just trace the training pants I have. I'm hoping it comes quickly :)

Danica, you are truly brilliant! Cutting things out is the thing I hate the worst. I love the idea of only having to mess with snaps and sewing in a soaker! :bigups:

She is too cute. What does she think of them??? I made Brody a pair today but didn't sew them well b/c I was really tired and hurrying. Tried them on him before he left to go to Parent's Night Out and he thought they were so cool. "MY unner-way-urrr? So pwetty. Tanks mommy." :LOL

Thanks :pink
Well, I told Nicole that we were going to change her diaper and when I handed it to her, she threw them on the floor and ran in the bedroom looking for a prefold  But after a few minutes I convinced her to put them on and I think she liked the fact that she was able to do it by herself. But she still wanted to put the snappi on ;)
