I finally took a stab at the Japanese short row method tonight, and it is so much cleaner than the wrap method!

But better yet!!!!

I figured out how to make the purl-side turn gap hidden when coming at it from the knit side! I'm so thrilled!!! I guess the exclamation points gave that away. ;)

These are the directions I followed: http://nonaknits.typepad.com/nonaknits/2005/04/japanese_short_.html

For the purl-turn-knit-hide, here are the modified directions (I'll try to get pictures over the next few days):

Knit to one stitch before the gap
Slip one stitch purl-wise from left to right needle
Pull up safety pin and place loop on left needle making sure the right leg of the loop is on the front-side of the needle
Place slipped stitch back on left needle
Knit stitch and loop together (this may be really tight - you might have to pull one loop over at a time)

Your gap should be hidden now. I really hope this technique works for more knitters than me.

I need to check the modified directions again tonight. I think I may have reversed the direction of the loop. I can't remember now if I had to twist the loop stitch or leave it normal. Well, shoot. My short rows do look pretty darn good, though!

ok I tried something different and I think it will work for us... its basically following the purl side instructions but with the working yarn on the wrong side... does that make sense?

That's basically the instructions I listed in the first post - it's the purl-side hide modified (hey! I'm a poet and didn't know it).

I'm sorry I haven't posted pictures yet; I've misplaced our camera. Or Anwyn's misplaced it... As soon as I find it, I'll take pics of the process.

::MAY CAUSE CONFUSION::

ok if I can remember what I did correctly I knit to the stitch before the last stich next to the gap(forgive me Im no good at writing these kind of things) slip the stitch over, turn the work around(Im sure it could be done from the front but this is easiest for me since its my first few times doing it) lift up the loop and place it right leg to front on your now right hand needle(working on the wrong side over here) turn the work back around to the right side, slip the stitch back over and knit together.

it sounds very similar to yours but i think i keep reading yours wrong or something cause I hear "knit to last stitch before gap slip 1st stitch of the SR to right, pull up pin, then slip back" so the loop ends up between the 1st and 2nd stitch in the short row's row, instead of between the stitch before the gap and stitch after gap(aka 1st stitch of SR) make sense?

we may be doing the same thing and Im interpreting it wrong. Ive never been good with directions LOL

Yeah, it's the same thing. ;)

You're slipping the stitch before the gap, then pulling up the safety pinned loop to the needle, then putting the slipped stitch back and knitting them together, which closes the gap. You have it! How do you think it looks? Mine are so much smoother now and not loose at all...

ok i figured out why i was reading it wrong... its been so long since I followed a pattern/instructions I forgot what I was reading LMAO
so yes this is a great way of doing it! and YES it is so much smoother AAAANNNDDD I dont get my usual gap of overly loose yarn that I have to redistribute after finishing.

My dh has a different thinking and learning style from me, so he needs different words than me when we're communicating b/c he visualizes things differently. My wording is right to me and my thought processes, but other people will need a different explanation. All that to say, we're saying the *same* thing, just using *different* words.

Knit to one stitch before the gap: Knit until you have one stitch on the left needle before the gap. If you knit that last stitch, you would be *at* the gap, not one stitch before the gap.

thanks though! I am just overly tired and trying to follow directions without reading well into them. I was completely missing that it said one in thereand added a 'the'... so I was getting knit to the stitch before the gap

this is what happens when you try to learn a new technique while NAKing an acrobat, LOL

did you, in fact, end up twisting it?

So when you use this method, do you end up wth big ole loops hanging on the inside of your work, or am I doing it wrong?
