I bought one skein of lion Brand Fisherman's. How can I dye this yarn? Do I have to dye it before I knit, or can I dye the finished wool soaker if I want it one color?
I'm a new knitter, thanks for any tips.

Angela,
I dyed my first soaker after it was finished. I started to dye my 2nd skein of Fisherman's last week and chickened out. I was afraid of messing it up and ending up with some ugly muddy brown which would be torture (for me!) to use.
Since your babe is still small, you could probably get 3 soakers from that one skein, if you dyed them after they were knit you could have 3 different colors.
Did you get your Fisherman's at Michael's? I went to the 41st and Yale store yesterday and bought 4 skeins. There was still several skeins on the shelf.

I really prefer to dye before I knit, IMO it has more depth. You certainly can dye it when it's complete if you only want one color, or you can try some painting techniques!
Are you planning to Kool-aid dye? Do you need in depth dyeing (I spelled it right for once!!!) directions?

I heard of some one dying with kool aid.. and I'd like to try that, but what other dyes for yarns are out there??? Oooooooooo I'm getting giddy with the possibiblities.

:lol my word censor is so funny.
I figured out how to do the dyeing! My 3 y.o. dd and I dyed a sample of fisherman's with pink and blue lemonade koolaid and got a nice coral pink and turquoise, with a little purple mixed in. We had so much fun and were so proud of our results. I'm using it to knit her a little change purse. I figure while I'm waiting for the soaker supplies, I might as well knit her something, so she doesn't feel left out!
I'm very proud to say that for the time being, dd has no idea that there is any other use for koolaid other than for dyeing purposes! She was going around today saying "I love koolaid!" Does anyone else feel a little stupid buying koolaid? Do you want to announce to everyone at the store, "I'm not a bad mom, I'm only buying this to dye yarn!"?

I always feel compelled at the store to tell people.."oh we don't drink the stuff...I use it to dye wool"

I DO tell people! I check out with 20 packs at a time, there is no way I can let that random check-out person think I am drinking THAT much kool-aid!

I used the "self checkout" lane - no one needs to know that I buy koolaid... 8) (that's the sneaky spy me)

The first time I bought Kool-Aid for dyeing, I had 8 packets * 5 colors = 40 packets of Kool-Aid in the cart. And a half-gallon of milk. heehee
The bagger asks if I have kids, and I replied that yes I had a child but would never feed him that crap. I was using this Kool-Aid to dye wool yarn!!!
Both the checker and the bagger were surprised and asked for details. I explained my method, and told them to search for Kool-Aid dyeing on the internet if they wanted to know more. :pink
I *was* hoping they would question my purchase, as I felt embarrassed that others would be thinking Kool-aid was good stuff for kids. I don't usually care what other people think, but I'm also usually doing healthy things. :D
