Wool as in *inner* layer?

I've been considering using wool interlock or jersey as an inner layer. I know I've only seen these materials being used as barrier layers, but what do you think? Might it work for an inner layer as well?

I wouldn't b/c even though you can get the softest merino wools...they'll still feel "itchy" and could irritate the skin where the elastic is and it puts a ton of pressure on the wool rubbing on the skin ;)
