How do you get a good blue with Wiltons?

I am having a really hard time getting a good blue with WIltons. The purple keeps seperateing :hmph: it looks nice but it isn't the affect I want.
The only good blue I can get is Sky Blue, but I need a royal/navy blue.
ANy ideas? :)

If you find out, you let me know. I can't get a good purple, either.

The best blue I have gotten is from the acid dyes from Dharma (or any acid dye, I am sure).

HUmm, I can get great purples, well not grapey purples but good violety purples. I did find out that if you use delphinum and cornflower blue. Soak a skein overnight to absorb up the purple....comes out a little varigated light purple/blue. Then you can get a nice seaspray blue buy adding a new skein. I haven't tried to repeat that but I worked really well once.

Yes... the only good purple I can get is with Kool Aid, too.....

I put a LOT of water in mine.... I don't really care for that deep purple, almost black color it can be.

Can I ask why you use wiltons? I mean, it's got to be more cost effective to switch to acid dyes, and you definitely get more consistent results :) I can't imagine dyeing anyway else now, LOL!

I know I started off using Wilton's and Kool Aid just because they were readily available. I do use it still.... I just think, for me, it is the availability and not having to order it and wait.... I want to do it right then and there, and I also won't let something go unless I try it first.

yeah, I can totally understand that. The learning curve on the acid dyes was wicked, too! But, it's definitely cheaper and you really can get such more depth to colors :) Of course, I'm about to embark on plant dyeing, so I'm a little bit crazy anyway, take what I say with that in mind :lol:

the acid dyes have a learnign curve, you basically have to figure out how to mix and the amounts to use, same as koolaid and wiltons was when you started. It's not terribly, but something new that you need to get used to.

Now, plant dyesing is a whole 'nother matter, becuase you have to deal with mordants and such then, and that's a whole new world ;)

I gotta start watchin the sale ads for kool-aid. I saw it at Walmart 5/$1.00... grocery store is koolaid robbery!

I dyed some with Tea, it was very easy.. a nice brown color (it's not for a soaker, but for a bag)... and tea doesn't require a mordant.

I think Wilton's might actually be cheaper than the acid dye, but the results just aren't as consistent!

I am doing alot of plant dyeing right now and I love it too!
