I know I saw this here in someone's sig. It was a link to their blog (on blogspot, IIRC) that had directions for creating a dress from vintage pillow cases and an old tee or tank. I've backtracked and searched high and low and cannot find that link again. Anyone remember who this was?

Okay... going to make me crazy... I had a link saved (before Mozilla threw them all away) for a simple pillowcase dress. I looked so simple... but I can't find it!!! Grrr... sorry, no help

from a thread at mdc:

First I cut my pillow case in half to the length I want it.

Then I serge the open end.

Then I do a simple baste stitch (with the machine do a straight stich on the longest length with zero width) around the waist of the pillow case one time , or by hand.
Don't knot this off because you'll want to pull the material over that string to make it gather. Pull the fabric around until it is gathered to equal width of the shirt you'll be using.
Adjust your gathers to get them the way you like

Next get out a stack of pins!

Put your shirt and skirt right sides together to get prepared for sewing.
I don't cut my shirt until the end.

Pin it every 2 inches or as often as you see the need to keep it all together. i Have been going about 2 inches below the bottom of the armpit line.

Now you can either hand sew/baste this or just go straight to the machine. I like to hand baste it once before I sew it so that I don't have to entirely rely on my pins to stay in place.

When you sew it, have the bottom of the shirt portion to the machine, the top out. Use a straight stich. You can sew twice if you want extra reinforcement or you could serge the fabrics together.

i sew once them, and then I serge the shirt fabric under the skirt seperately. I leave it a couple of inches longer then the skirt edging so that it lies nicer underneath and doesn't tend to rub on the skin at the gathering point.

For the first one, which was a long sleeve dress, I left the shirt totally in tact to add warmth to the dress for winter wear

As for your handkercchief, you could use it to deorate the top of the dress (the shirt) or you could use it as a little apron for the skirt. You could just sew it one where you like it, or half of it as the whole thing may be too big.

I will do that soon and show you a picture of what I mean I intend to put step by step picture instructions on our tutorial here, eventually!

I have a ton of vintage buttons that I am toying with the idea of using as decor on these dresses too...

Okay, I'm totally loving the dresses on that blog, but can't find instructions. I'm sure it's totally simple, but would like something to follow if it's there.

ETA: :emb yeah, reread what you said about the June archives. :LOL

Does anyone know Rowena? I've been trying to get in touch with her about the pillowcase dress she posted. I wanted to get her permission to create a few for the FAA Auctions, but I can't seem to get in touch with her.

Cathy,

Rowena's baby has been sick so she's not been online much the past few days.

I'm sorry to hear that Karen. :( Maybe I'll get in touch with her in time for the next round of auctions, then.
