View Full Version : Attaching Buttons?

I have a couple patterns and I've read more that have buttons as part of the finishing of an item. They all read "attach buttons", but don't give any specifics.
So...when attaching buttons to a knitted item, is it any different then when I want to sew a flat or shank button onto a shirt or jacket? Just use yarn and a tapestry needle?
Am I once again, over thinking the simple? :bag

generally I use the yarn, unless it's novelty or otherwise won't hold up to wear, then I use matching embroidery floss (I don't like to use thread becuase it's so thin it will cut into the yarn you sew it on and eventually wear it out)

Theresa, how the heck do you get the yarn through the buttons? I have yet to meet a yarn needle that will fit through a button hole and for that matter, a strand of yarn that will fit through a needle small enough to fit through a button hole!

I use the largest tapestr needle I can find (from teh needlepoint section of michaels) Then I thread it with regular cotton quiltng thread, then I take the other end, wrap it around the yarn and pull it though ;)
Or, do how you would for beading: once you thread the needle with the cotton thread, tie the ends in a knot so it's a big loop, then pull the yarn end through the loop and over (so they are overlapping) and then pull it htough the button/bead.
hmm, not very good description, LOL. Shall I do a tutorial on it?
