I need clarification. Some of you are knitting items that will be sold in some sort of auction, correct? Where will the items end up? Do the people who buy the items donate them to a specific woman dealing with breast cancer, or do they go to the person who bought the item?

I guess I was thinking that it would be cool if I could actually give away some items to someone battling the disease, but I don't know how practical that is or if they would go for as much if the buyer didn't get the item.

What about an auction of some sort in the Seattle area? What about holding a real-life auction in a real-life place with our knitted items? Do you think that is an idea worth persuing?

How about this:

1. items donated to us by our members are used in a drawing (several drawings??) ... qualify for drawing by donating to Jesse's fund.

2. Auctions (wahmchicks? I dunno yet) run by a variety of people with winnings paid directly to Jesse's fund

3. New concept inspired by your idea, Jesse: "buy it now" auction items that you 'buy' , paying JEsse's fund, that are donated to cancer patients or hospital or cancer group? So items are donated to cancer patients in your honor. We'd need to locate sucha group.

I'm going to need people to organize each of these missions. How's that Jesse?

Jesse--
I was planning on knitting one of each pattern in the Breast Cancer Knitty handbook since each of the designers have given their permission. I have forwarded one of the emails I received to you so you can read the money-concerns.

Three of the items I am knitting will each be in honor of family members. One for an aunt who died from breast cancer, one for an aunt who is going through her fourth time with treatments for breast cancer, and one for an aunt who was just last week diagnosed with breast cancer.

I was planning on donating each piece to be used in the drawing. That is, of course, flexible.

I thought we were going to do something like AFO does/is doing at wahmchicks to raise funds. I am going to help out no matter what we are doing, that is just what I thought was going on. ;)

Pam, I will help however you need me to. Just lmk.

most hospitals and all hospices will accept such donations. either each knitter can find her own or they can all be sent to one person who will take them in a bunch to a single location.

i like the idea of each knitter being able to take her donation personally, because then s/he could give it to a family member who is undergoing treatment. then again, you could have family like mine: when my SIL was undergoing breast cancer treatment she shaved her head and dyed the fuzz orange. no way would she have stood for that chemo cap! but my grandmother would have worn it willingly.

I say lets do all 3!

I'm planning on knitting up a lace shawl of my own design. (I'll try to write up the patterns as a freebie, too.) Originally I was going to do a lace weight yarn - silk & alpaca - but it's literally like knitting with sewing thread. So I may move up to big honkin sock weight merino in one of Hillary's Knit for the Cure colorways. It can go up for auction, drawing or direct donation (for higher $$$). I'll try to make it soft & nonirritating for a cancer patient.

Something else to think about: I noticed pattern baskets (containing several patterns, yarn and needles, stitch markers) sold very well. I'm willing to donate some things for a super knitting basket - maybe some of the other mamas are too?

We could entice them by allowing them to include a brochure/coupon about their businesses in the basket.

I can donate something to a basket, np. Basically, someone tell me what to do and I'll do it. :LOL

So who would be arranging that? Our Auctions chair, right? Whoever she's gonna be?

OK playing catch up here :) sorry to be so tardy--bad auctions coordinator!

OK am I understanding this right?

Auctions to give a donated hat to a breast cancer patient? Proceeds go to Jesse's fund.

Auctions to give proceeds to jesse's fund--soakers, etc.

SO it still needs to be decided who would dreceive the donated items, etc.

AND Julia is in charge of the drawings? So I would need to forward the winners to the auctions to her for the drawing, right?

Auctions and drawings are totally separate, yes. Are you thinking the auction winner should earn a spot in the drawing since she's essentially donating to the fund? She'll win her auction, pay for it by making a donation to the fund (right?), get a receipt, send her receipt to Danica/Julia, then be entered into the next upcoming drawing.

I think this will be great, we can get knitted and sewn hats!

One woman who runs it is local to me.

Yep, I was thinking the winners from the auctioins could be entered into a drawing. However, what are your thoughts about the two different kinds of auctions--one where they "get" something vs. one where they are donating the hat. Maybe the drawing could be for the hat donation auctions to make sure thsoe generous bidders "get" something? OR would it make it too confusing to split the two up like that.

I think it might be confusing. They'lll get an entry into the drawing, as well as personal satisfaction for their good deed! :D

Should hats be at a flat rate? Or auctioned competitively?

i think hats could probably be buy it now.

I would say have the hats start out at "retail" and people can auction and raise the price if they want. But I also think if we do it that way we should have a good number of hats.

OK I have a question....

I'm thinking of making a knitting needle roll case for the cause. Would I be better off auctioning it off or offering it for a prize to one of the donors?

susan, i think that would be an AWESOME prize for the drawing!

Good question Susan. You can wait and see if we have enough prizes for the drawing, and if we do, then just sell it as an auction?
