It's definitely a nice yarn, and I "think" it comes from sheep-friendly farms. But I've researched that particular supplier, and they don't have anything about their wool being from small farms, or organic. Maybe it's in the pamphlets they mail out. The yarn is minimally processed, though.
Anyway, the word "organic" is very specific and means that the sheep eat organic food, are not treated with any chemicals, and that the wool is processed using organic soaps, etc. Like Tresliske Merino: http://www.treliskeorganic.com/
Just wanted to point out the difference between sheep-friendly (or cruelty-free), minimally processed and organic yarn.

from what i have been told of jess's yarn it is organic, but because it's from canada they can't label it organic by US standards. if this is incorrect, i guess i need to start looking for another yarn........... :? off to do some research.
thanks, karen for pointing that out :)

Well, maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But it's hard to say for sure, and I guess I was just concerned about the word "organic" being tossed around without any real back-up, kwim? If Jess has gotten the info from them that it's organic, then I do believe it. It's just that I haven't seen it on the supplier's site, or specifically on Jess's site either.

i totally understand where you are coming from karen. i believe you are probably correct. i just re read the info and it is several herders sheep coming to them to be milled and spun i guess. i never really investigated them myself, just talked to jess about it. i have never claimed that my soakers were organic, just that the wool was minimally processed. i will stop using the term organic, and just stick to minimally processed. i need to find a way to get reliable yarn EASILY. it's hard to have to contact someone else for your yarn. guess i'll just keep looking. i really like the softness and the price of jess's though.
could you give me the link to the website? i've never been there to check it out. thanks!!

No, it's not organic. The sheep are raised on several smaller family farms, not big commercial farms. It is minimally processed, which you can definitely tell from the vegetable matter in it. And of course it's super soft ;) I buy it from this supplier for several reasons. First is price, you can't beat their pricing on wholesale yarns. Second is they are supporting smaller family run farms vs. the big commercial industry. Third is the mill is also smaller and family run, thus supporting another family business.
The mill just recently installed new spinning equipment so the thickness/guage of the yarns will now be more consistent.
