View Full Version : Anyone up for a Rogue-A-Long?

Admitedly I have a Rogue on the needles but I'm going to want to do another. My first run I'm glad I didnt invest a chunk o money on super good yarn. It was my first project of this level difficulty (actually the cables are NOT difficult, I swear..I'm finding that to be the easiest part) But I've never completed a sweater, especially one that needs to be finished as such (sewn) and I've made my fair share of mistakes. This one is in heather green woolease. As soon as I finish the hood I'll be casting on another before I even complete the sleeves on the one already in progress.
Just looking for at least one buddy to knit along with me. I'd love to see what others do with this pattern :)

Oh..if your not familiar with Rogue, the pattern is at
www.girlfromauntie.com (the companion hat is also a breeze I might add!) and for such a wonderful in depth pattern it certainly is cheap!

I started one during the rogue-a-long last year, and I've got both sleevees finished and languishing in my basket :( I just kind of lost interest. I have serious problems following other people's patterns, I find myself constantly wanting to tweak here and change there, LOL. It's a sickness, really. But it is a wonderful pattern!

that is a gorgeous pattern!! But alas, I have purchased the yarn to make the candy sweater from knitty next.

I hear ya Theresa..I've had difficulty following some parts of her pattern and have tweaked certain things. I'm halfway thru the hood on run #1 and half of one sleeve done.
I find that the parts where I'm not cabling is where I get bored. LIke once I got past the cable detail on the first sleeve, I really slowed down...alas that first sleeve is not done :)
I do LOVE the cables.thats why I like her celtic cap pattern....kept me really interested and knit very quickly!

yep, jenna is amazing with cables, there's no doubt. I really do like the pattern, it's just my own issue iwth not being able to follow a pattern, period. It's the deisgner in me. A pattern can be perfect, but I always think I can make it more perfect ;)

ooh, that's pretty and does it really only take 1200m of yarn? That's only 6 skeins/ 600g of most aran weights isn't it?

twirlgirl

I'm not finished with mine so I cant tell if I'm going to run out yet (though I doubt it)
I bought 10 skeins of woolease and it appears that I'll have enough. If I need a smidge of another skein, I'm not terribly worried about dyelot at this point. With as many messups as there are in this sweater, it is destined to be my yard work sweater anyway)

Count me in, I'll buy the pattern later and work out if I have enough of any one type of yarn in my stash to make it with or whether I need to BUY MORE YARN ;)

What makes you think you couldn't Julia? I've seen things you've knitted and you knit beautifully - no reason why you couldn't do this :)

I agree Julia, there is NOTHING in that pattern that you can't do. It looks more complicated than it actually is.
The thing I had the hardest part with was casting on (provisionally) but my friend Eden didnt even try to cast on provisionally and just knitted on. Hers has a nice rolled bottom.
The cables are NOT difficult. There are a few stitches that I didnt understand but were easily available online.
Do not be afraid of patterns :) Its only knitting mama!

I didn't do the provisional hem either becuase I thought with the yarn I used (my 2 pyl in bark) that the hem would be too bulky doubled over. So I did a rolled edge for 6 rows, then did a row of purl to stop the roll ;)

Seriously, you can do it, it's not a difficult pattern in terms of sweaters. you have to pay attention ont eh cable sections but generally it's really straightforward.

it sounds like an easy pattern to me, in the round to the armholes - that's how i generally simplify patterns i consider complicated!

the first thing i knit was a sweater with a braided cable. i ended up frogging the sweater over 3 times in total but never because of the cable. and my sister knit herself an aran cabled afghan as her 3rd knitting project!

come on, Julia, you can do it! i'll do it if you do it!

perhaps maybe we can start with the celtic cap for those intimidated by the cables?

You can make one with a mere skein of yarn, and I know y'all have that in your stash LOL.

I just casted one on last night in DK Sirdar Snuggly for Cassidy.
Its a good primer for Jenna's cables. But with that said...Rogue itself is very very easy.

oh, marnie! you're putting me up to it! :LOL

The thing I'm really scared of is the chart. I'm no good at charts, something about my brain can't wrap itself around all those symbols. I think I saw an episode of Knitty Gritty where they actually wrote out the instructions from a chart line by line. If I had some help doing that, maybe I could try it?

Oh, now I'm excited a little... maybe I should? Think we could have them done by next winter? ;)

Ruth
02-16-2005, 08:22 AM
You know what Julia, cables are actually easier from a chart once you understand the symbols. I rewrote the first chart I had for cable instructions myself and by the time I'd done that I understood it :) .

Next winter? you never know, if not it might be ready by the time it fits our daughters lol ;)

twirlgirl

I should have mentioned that as well.
Jenna's charts, although LOOK complicated, they arent. She has a key for all the symbols and what they are. The first half of Rogue I had to keep referring to the key, but now I have my own little system for decyphering them since i cable without a cable needle (see http://bagateller.tripod.com/tips/cable.html ) There IS at least one cable stitch that you really need a cable needle or at least a split ring marker or something. But otherwise....easy peasy!
Also if you knit with a wall next to you, tape the chart and the key up there so you can constantly refer to it. Here is my messy knitting corner of the living room http://www.mylittletribe.com/images/knit/charts.jpg

marnie

the chart is easier than the written word once you get the hang of it. i could help you transcribe the chart and by the time you've finished a few rows i bet you say "forget it, i'll just use the chart!"

i'm picturing the rogue in bluefaced leicester....

Funny Marnie, I'm thinking 'luxurious lovely coloured yarn' too. I've got funded pp for the first time ever and I'm thinking I wouldn't have to add much to it to get some lovely yarn for this. Then I just have to work out who to buy it off. I can get BFL very cheap here since this is where it 'grows' lol.

marnie
02-16-2005, 08:39 AM
i think the BFL would be perfect because it has such wonderful drape, a nice sheen (and since the whole front and back or the sweater are just plain stockinette you want it to hang nicely off the old girls there in front!) but it would display the cables nicely, too.

Come ON Julia!

I'm in - I bought the pattern a few weeks ago and have some yarn taunting me. Unfortunately I have a few projects to finish first.

FYI, it's a hooded pullover, but can be modified to be a cardigan - she has instructions on her website.

i don't think i could do this back and forth instead of in the round but OH how i love the cardi version...

I mentioned my friend Eden doing Rogue a few messages back...she did her rogue in Rowan summer tweed (I think that was the one)

I'm probably going to use cascade eco this time around in one of the darker colors. I also entertained the idea of knitting it complete in ecru and then dip dyeing it *shrug*
not sure yet :)

averymybaby
02-17-2005, 08:56 PM
Hmmm. dip dye :D

What about Cascade Sierra? the merino/pima mix? I'm wanting some cotton. I run hot. :LOL

My yarn came yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A whole kilo of it!!!!!!!! (I had to take a picture of the bagful and post it on my blog because I'm so excited) It's BFL by British Breeds Yarns from www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk in Oatmeal (the only colour they offer at wingham wool work). I'm over the moon with it, it's so soft and the colour is perfect for me. Can't wait to swatch (never thought I'd hear myself saying that lol). I've decided my Rogue is going to have to be a cardigan (even though I also hate knitting flat) because I just don't wear jumpers and I wear hooded cardigans ALL the time.

Somehow I missed this knit-a-long. The pattern is so so addictive. I start last week and I'm knitting the hood right now. You can see pics at my blog from this morning (hoodless).

Ruth: I had problems downloading the pattern on my computer. Tried dh's computer, and it downloaded just fine. i don't know what the problem is though.

Me! I ordered/downloaded the pattern yesterday and then saw this thread today! I think I might do the cardigan mod. Not sure what yarn I'm using. Possibly BFL. Hmmm.

My yarn came earlier this week. I bought some Rambouillet/Merino from Beaverslide and it's beautiful!

Now just to decide whether a pullover or cardigan!

I started it last year, did both sleeves and then got bored with it, LOL! Maybe I'll pull it out and work with ya :) I was doign it in my farm 2 ply, in the bark. I'll post a pic on my blog tomorrow if the sun is out so I can get a decent pic.
