collecting links for the next experiment:

with norwegian purl method: http://www.interweave.com/knit/interweave_knits/pdf_files/Norwegian_Purl.pdf

(FYI, this ribbing is not considered to be very stretchy.)

OK. so you don't have to tell me, I'm off to frog my waistband now - that'll teach me to rush off ahead :?

That corregated ribbing ---- in the one blog said it takes a long time....I don't know if I like it enough to go to the extra work.......

Changed my mind - I'm just going to make two pairs of pants so I can still use the waistband I've already done.

Observations so far on my practice ribbing - when I did normal ribbing with the norwegian purls it seemed ok but once I brought in the second yarn the purls have gone a bit loopy. I have to keep practicing and when I've done a decent sized swatch I'll post a pic.

Oh and when it says on the interweave notes that the technique is 'slightly' different for flat knitting read - totally different and I couldn't work out how to do it so mine is a mock circ swatch lol.

eta: I've just been back to look at the rockartifacts/socknitting link and actually mine doesn't look far different from hers so I'm not doing too bad after all.

P.S. yes I was one of those kids at school who always had their hand up to answer the questions the teacher asked lol. I get more to show for it here though ;)

Ruth, the corrugated ribbing isn't part of the p-pants class, just something I want to fool with in the future! (See it's in the techniques/links forum?) Did you do it for ppants?? I want to see a pic!

Hey Pam, a woman at my LKG mentioned a 3 needle cast on as being supah stretchy. 3rd needle is larger than others so the loop thingy is larger than normla, ??? NM I am making little sense.

I have just swatched it at the moment - I'll post a pic later when I'm really supposed to be on the computer, but ds and I are going to dye some wool today to make a second pair of ppants to use it on :)

Oh, and it doesn't take that long once you get the knack of the norwegian purl in the interknit instructions ;)

Thanks for posting those - especially the norwegian purl instructions.

Here are pics of my swatch. It's done with fishermens on size 8s which make it a bit loose for my liking and highlight the uneven tension when I was starting off the normal ribbing using the norwegian purl. Note the wavy channel island cast on too Cynthia? This is with the purls under the bumps.

In the back view you can also see where I had the yarns the wrong way round in terms of front and back so the natural is stranded along the back instead of the orange for the first couple of rows, this also explains why the orange purls are more bulgy on the first couple of rows (I hope).

eta: It does have a tendency to curl a bit like the one woman said on her blog. Also, what's the point of it? I thought the point of ribbing was to be as stretchy as possible?

I just learned to do Norwegian Purl myself! I had class with Beth Brown-Reinsel at Stitches. She also showed us how to do the corrugated ribbing. It made me want to knit something with it too, but I haven't figured out what yet. :)

We were told that it's tradtional to do corrugated ribbing on the bottom and neck of a fair isle sweater. I don't know what the "point" is, maybe just to look good? ;)

I think you're right Abigail, it looks really pretty and I want to use it on some stuff, I thought trouser cuffs ;)

Trouser cuffs is a great idea! except that they wouldn't be reversible, if you wanted to be able to fold them. I was thinking the hem of a sweater. Perhaps not a fair isle, but some kind of sweater.

That's where to see my 2nd pp waistband with corrugated ribbing. It looks much better on the right sized needles :) . My question is: do you think I should now keep the natural attached and have some thin stripes of it throughout the pants or remove it and keep going with just the variegated wool? It's fishermens which ds and I dyed with ka.

If I manage to figure out that technique, I'll probably run pin stripes down the sides.

I think a hint of the natural would be pretty.

Thanks, pinstripes sound good Amy. I'm thinking these will be shorts with the corrugated ribbing at the leg cuffs too.
