to dyeing to get the same colorways with the same repeats.
Is it as simple as remembering/documenting what you've done?
Like writting down a "recipe" for the dye ratios and measuring your repeats?

I keep a notebook with my notes on what I plan to do, what I actually did, and howit turned out.
After I am done I measure the length of each repeat and record it.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you
No, really, it's not a big secret. YOu have to first (and most imprtantly) make sure that your skeins are always the same length, meaning you don't want to try to dye a 100" skein to match a 50" skein. Then, for dye, just be sure that you always use the same amount of dye powder to the same amount of water. Getting the repeats to be the same length is the trickiest, and that is really all just by sight, so it takes some practice ;)

so how do you measure the yarn?
do you have something to wind it on that is a specific length and then count how many times you wind it?
or have someone else hold one end and walk FAR FAR away? :lmdo
I mean I use matching skeins but it wouldn't surprise me if they were off. YKWIM

My dh made me a peg board with removable pegs and different lengths between holes to fit pegs in; so you can adjust lengths, yet do the same length over and over. kwim? I think I may have a pic somewhere.
Also do you want consistantcy for 1 lot? I mean are you going to use this all for one project? If so, you shoul dye all the yarn you need at the same time; wind it together, tie it together, and dye it together.

Niddy noddies are made specific lengths so you can measure the length of your skein - there's another thread not too long ago on how to make your own very cheaply.
Thanks for letting us in on your secrets dye gurus ;) I feel like a member of the freemasons or the magic circle now lol.
