I'm making some monkey pants and need to dye an offwhit yarn. I was thinking of using coffee or tea. I was trying to think through the differences between Coffe kind of a black brown, or roobius tea which is kind of red or lipton tea which is more brown. I dunno.....

What do you think?

Also how long do I brew them? can I microwave or is this a stovetop thing? or maybe just a sit and let bathe thing?

help.

I just tried to dye some fishermans in coffee on Weds. ..
I breweed the coffe in the coffe maker than tried to hand paint the yarn.
I let that soak for a bit but was not happy at all. so I twisted the skein and let certain parts soak in the coffee.
Still not brown...just a pretty beige.
I used Folgers classic (3 scoops)
I am thinking i just need to order brown or go pick up some Wiltons or acid dyes brown to get a better color.
thank god i only tried it on 2 oz of yarn

I just realized my hubby left a quarter pot this morning so I snipped some to try a sample, it's soaking in vinegar water now and I'll drop it in, in a bit.

Should I turn the pot back on to heat it up and set the dye/coffee after putting the sample in?

Kind of a personal question, don't you think? :sly:

I guess that would depend on the kind of relationship you have with your monkey. ;)

I'm giving this one away. But.... some people really :heart them.

I don't think you'll get the depth of colour you need for a monkey with coffee or tea (instant coffee might well be better because it could be more concentrated). I've got an excellent dark brown icing dye (uk equivalent to wiltons) which gave me a good monkey colour, also a colour they called chestnut which gives sort of redhead colour (he could be an orang utan lol).

My sister just called to tell me some lady at her eye doctor's office had a monkey wearing a diaper with her in the waiting room. It kept biting her. (Biting the lady, not my sister). :ohno

It was a sposie. If I had seen the the monkey, I would have converted him to cloth.

And Amy--It was a brown monkey

Seriously, I don't think you're going to get a rich enough monkey brown with coffee or tea. I'd do chocolate brown fiber reactive dye if they were my own monkey pants. :bigups:

well so far... the yarn is a kinda light, but not too light, reddish brown from sitting in the coffee for about 5 hours. I'm thinking I'll turn the pot on in a few hours to heat it up and see and then wash it to see how it holds.

I'll take pics to post before I do 2 skeins =)

update: I took the yarn out of the pot and it was the most beautiful reddish brown I was so happy :) until I ran water over it and it all went down the drain. The coffee made the yarn look dirty and with he little pieces of grounds that snuck in there it looked like I ran the yarn over with my car in the street. :(

I just got back from the store with more than enough grape and orange to dye the wool. My plan is to dye the yarn with a purple orange repeat with alot of brown it the middle then set and then go back over switch the colrs and hopefully will get a repeat of purplish brown/ brown/ orangish brown

Brown is a wierd goal

I totally forgot about this until just now. If your purple orange doesn't work-it was kinda grey for me- I'll can send you a bit of chestnut acid dye. It is a good monkey brown. Let me know.

Here's the link to how the color turned out.
http://hippymama.myphotoalbum.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=Knitting&page=5

If you make orange kool aid with a little grape you'll get a pretty brown.

you can also dunk it in orange first with a little grape splashed over the top.

but if you dunk it in grape and then pt orange over it you still get grape slightly muted but still very grape.

I'm really liking how this is knitting up. Kinda funky with a general brown ness from a distance but close up obviously grapey orange.

=)

I'll post pics when I'm totally finished. right now I have about an inch to go on the legs then the face and ears and tail. I love creative stuff like this!! :heart
