I am making a baby layette to sell at auction for my son's school. Little wrap sweater and hat, possibly matching pants/bottoms, in this textured knit stitch:

http://woolywonder.com/lookie/mysterystitch/smaller.jpg

I need to select a yarn that is soft enough for a newborn and simple enough to show the stitch pattern. The resulting product needs to be so cute that people want to spend a zillion dollars on it for their grandbaby-on-the-way. "Won't the new baby look darling in that as her/his coming home/baby naming party outfit!!!"

I'll make a girl set and a boy set. Probably need a main and contrasting color for each set.

Any ideas? I loved the way it worked up in Cascade 220, but the regular follks might not groove on wool.... y'know the whole 'itchy/allergic to wool' dealy.

This design needs to be breathtakingly gorgeous. Help!! :help

Am I greedy if I want to make up the layette before I share the pattern stitch??

I found the stitch on a hat, and several online friends have helped me track down the how-to.

If ya really want it, send me a PM, k?

hey, I thought of another yarn last night (when I woke up in the middle of the night, dreaming about it) I think that an alpaca would be absolutely dreamy, but do you want machine wash only, cause it definitely isn't, LOL! Anyway, it's smooth enought o show the stitch, and would be buttah soft ;)

I have some GOA (50% cotton 50% acrylic) that is sooo soft that would be nice for a layette.

It is pricy though, at my LYS it is $6.35 for a 50 gram ball (60 meters).

What about some of :theresa Henry's Attic yarn, her site is down right now or I would pick something out. (bandwidth).

Ifyou can stand superwash.. I'd go that route. That way it can be washed but still has a hand nicer than acrylic. I think they have a nice range of colors here

I saw some really nice wool/cotton blend stuff from lambs pride at the LYS the other day. It was SO soft and drapey, but, of course, it was hand-wash only. I would think that any special baby layette would never go through the washer anyway.. but you never know.. some people don't get it. I think if you could find something like "cotton cashmere blend", it would sound so luxuirious and they wouldn't think "itchy wool" . It would sound specail and delicate for a new baby :)

Here is some.. but I have no idea if it will be good for showing stitch definition.. it might be too squishy soft. Worth a look though.. VERY nice color selection

Could you find a comparable Cascade yarn that works like the 220? Their cotton or blends?

I think the cotton cashmere would be good - the cotton would give you great stitch definition.

I'm making a blanket out of her baby cashmerino and it's dreamy soft. I don't want to finish and give the baby her blankie!

I like the Dale suepr wash, but its in dk or even fingering weight....

for heavier stuff, that Debbie Bliss cahsmerino is devine or the cotton cashmere.....

good luck....

the DB cashmerino really is lovely to touch, but I have to say that it doesn't hold up very well. It pills terribly if you touch it wrong, LOL!

giood to know about the cashmerino... i'll skip it for my next project (shawl collar cardigan) and go with the merino aran instead! the things you learn around here... :D

What about debbie bliss wool/cotton?

I'm making a dress out of that right now, and I think it would be kind of high maintenance for layette.. not the right feel either...?

how about mission falls 1824 cotton? I love that stuff. Might be too slubby though, for the stitch definition you want.

I still think the inca organic cotton is the way to go :thumb
