I am desperate to replicate this beautiful stitch found on a friend’s twenty year old hat. It was knit flat and seamed. The inside looks like k1p1 ribbing, but the outside looks like a brioche or fisherman’s rib something???
Close-up, big photo:
mighty big photo through this link (http://www.woolywonder.com/lookie/mysterystitch/namethatstitch.jpg)
Inside, slightly out of focus, looking like ribbing:

What you see when you stretch out the ribbing-looking-inside:

Anyone want to help solve this mystery?!!

I think she wants a "regular" shot of the outside rather than the close-up! I would too.
Um, it kind of looks like the wrong side of shaker... the wrong side looks similar to the shaker...
Let me see if I can get a "wrong side" of mine.

This is the scarf in a relaxed state. I would have taking more pictures but my memory card is full at the moment.
Okay edit....here are links to a few more pictures of another scarf with the shaker rib....

I think the first shot is "right" side and the other two are wrong side at various stages of "stretch".

nah, it's not fisherman's, fishermans looks roughly the same both inside and out.
I'm stumped. It's beautiful, though! Will have to take a flip through my barbara walker encylopedia later today to see if I can spot it in there!

I think someone over on the knitty board figured it out - or at least narrowed it down to two things. Have you tried those yet?
I'm going to be really controvertial and say that I think it's tunisian crochet!!!!!
I've got a really old mon tricot stitch dictionary of my mum's and you can definitely use it to make stitches that look exactly like knitting but you can also do more woven type stitches too.
basic stitch here (about halfway down the page):
http://www.heritageshoppe.com/heritage/stitches/tunisian.html
this one has a link to the knit and purl looking stitches:
http://www.anniesattic.com/pages/etc.html (lol - these are just links to stitchguide.com)
the pictures here are apalling but you can get the idea:

various illustrations linked here:

I've convinced myself that that's what it is now - anyone agree?

Sure does look like the Tunisan. What did the knitty person say??

Um, yeah. I was 90% sure it was tunisian crochet, but thought I might get beheaded for the mere suggestion. Crochet rocks, folks, but I'm afraid of you.

I've always called it the basic afghan stitch, I think that's the same as tunisian, right? Why don't those links work for me?

Yeah, Tunisan crochet is how you make afghans... I bought a pattern for baby blankets, although I had no idea what tunisan was. Then I figured out that I didn't know how to do tunisan :lol I have great patterns, I need to get some needles.

nope, it's not crochet, and I do believe we have a winner!
It's the double rose pattern mentioned by the gal at knitty!! Wheee!!

I meant the afghan stitch as the name of a stitch. It looks just like knitted stockinette, and it does look webbed like that when pulled apart. If it's drapey enough.
