I only can do food coloring and koolaid right now but I'd love to see your favorite skeins and if you could tell me how to do it.
I have 8 oz of natural sitting around and need something to do while I wait for my HPY co-op yarn to come (another month probably snow )

Meredith do you remember how you got those shades?

Which ones?
For the top colorway, that was lemon-lime and berry blue KA, and brilliant blue and royal blue acid dyes.
For the rainbow, it was all acid dyes... scarlet, royal blue, emerald green, sun yellow, either purple or lilac (can't remember), and for the orange, I *think* it was scarlet and sun yellow mixed together.

I've only dyed yarn twice, here is my first.

The other is a ball of pinks I dyed with a variety of KA colors, knit it into a Ribby Wrap but frogged it all. I'll redo it for spring/summer.

This is the only one I could find online at the moment. It's BFL dyed with blue and violet wiltons.

I did a variegated rainbow and dark indigo blue. It's such a pain in the butt to get that many colors to come out evenly.
Normally, when I do up to 4 colors in a variegated yarn, I just hang it over the pot so 1/4th of the yarn is in the pot and the rest is out of the pot. But when I do a rainbow, I use 6 individual colors, so there really isn't a good way to do it hanging over the pot. (Thinking about it now I guess I could use just red, yellow, and blue and then overlap the colors to get orange, green, and purple :idea . It would make life alot easier!!!)
So anyway, I lay it out on saran wrap and use a syringe (I use the one that came with my Ronco Rotisserie, but you can probably just use a turkey baster) to apply the dye in small sections. Make sure you wear gloves or you wind up with black hands (ask me how I know ;) ) Then I roll the whole thing up and put it in a steamer basket on the stove for 30 minutes or so. It really makes a big mess and sometimes the colors wind up mixing and you get something you really didn't expect.
HTH :)

Pam, that's just beautiful in its simplicity. I really like single color variegations. I think I need to do some more of them.

this (at the bottom, not the brown)

would have been great if I had managed to figure out it would be for pants and not a soaker so there are 2 different colors of blue :( Oh well, could have been beautiful! I like the beginning anyway. :D

This is my first attempt at KA dyeing (thanks to Pam M :) ) - I'll root out the packets to tell you which flavours I used later. Second pic is a bit blurry but you can get the idea. I'm thinking of overdyeing the hpy with something dark because I think the colours are a bit dull. Ds 'helped' me to paint the wool too, I'm so pleased with the results - I'll post a pic of the pants I'm knitting with it when they're finished.
