Who's in?!? We won't do it for a while, but I need to prepare a little bit of supplies for those who want to get pre-sewn body parts, inner head, and wigs made. Prices will be for a 13 inch (I call them toddler sized) doll:
pre-sewn body parts: $7.00
Pre-made inner heads: $6.00
Pre-crocheted wigs short hair: $8.00 and long hair $12.00
Then you will need needles, floss, and wool, which I also have if you like.
This is a very satisfying project, even for beginners!!! I myself will be making an exact replica of our host Pamelamama. Doesn't that sound like fun? :banana

Hmmm...I'm thinking of making Andrew a Grandpa doll. He is absolutely in love with his Grandpa, and this would be a great way for him to never have to be apart. The last time I attempted a doll, though, the head came out all wonky. I know that you will help me get it perfect, though. ;)

Oh! We're coming out with Grandparent dolls in a few weeks, that's so funny! We are working on the head shaping right now, it's kind of tricky making them look older. I'm going to be ordering a ton of hair yarn at the end of the week and I'm getting older colors such as grey/silver. Yesterday I started a salt and pepper wig that's coming out really interesting.
O.K. anyways, if anyone would like to make a larger doll (16-18 inches) let me know and I'll figure out prices for those body parts and inner heads and wigs. You can all make your own inner heads and wigs, but that is a lot more advanced and you have to have a LOT of patience, but I'll show you how if you like. Go ahead and start listing hair and skin choices. As for clothes, you make your own, I don't like to make doll clothes, as Tammy will tell you! You can also just buy teddy bear or doll clothes anywhere. Preemie and infant clothes from the thrift store work as well.
Oh, and sewing is easy enough for beginners, I promise. :mwah

Um hello people! YOu can also KNIT clothing for the dolls!!! Hmm, maybe I should be working on designes...
Say REbecca...do you have pictures of the "parts" you are referring to so that people can "see" what they will get? That might help understand what work is going to be involved in finishing/detailing them...
I am curious as to what the pre-crochet wigs look like...I haven't a clue (not that I have tried to find out though.)
marnie
01-05-2005, 01:50 PM
is the long hair like the toddler hair on your site with pigtails or like the mamma hair?
mommomrebecca
01-05-2005, 01:56 PM
A pre-crocheted wig looks like a big rat's nest of loops. You have to cut the loops and style as you like. Otherwise, you get mohair yarn and crochet your own.
Marnie-
Whatever length you want for the long. You'll be cutting it to the length you want.

we're in, for sure. I've asked several times and maya consistently points to the brown skin and black hair so i'd like to make the 13" doll in brown with black curly long hair. I will need as much of it premade as you'll make, and all the trimmings, notions, wool, etc. please choose colors for the eyes and mouth that you think will look nice on that skin tone. i don't see any dolls in that color on your site so i don't know which eye colors would look nice with it.

I wanna join but I also have a question. Do we need a machine or can we do the sewing by hand? If we can do it by hand I am totally in!
I am leaving next Wed (Jan 12th) and will be gone for 3 weeks (Feb 2nd) so I hope I don't miss it!
Color choices:
Doll 1 - DS
Skin: Fair
Hair color: Light Blond
Hair type: Curly
Hair lenght: semi short (I am thinking just above the shoulders, whatever length that is)
Eye Color: Medium Blue
Doll 2 - Me - Bigger Doll
Skin: Fair
Hair color: Brownish Red
Hair type: Straight
Hair length: long (I am growing mine out)
Eye Color: Medium Blue
Doll 3: DH - Bigger Doll
Skin: Medium
Hair color: Brown
Hair type: straight
Hair length: short
Eye color: Hazel
As far as how the hair is styled, I am want to make it look just like my DS. Right now his hair is about 1 1/2 inches (in parts), blond and curly, so I was thinking a bit longer than an average 'boy' hair cut. Do you have some pictures we can reference? I am also interested in making one that looks like me, as long as you tell me this won't take 4 years to finish. ;) If the above descriptions aren't enough info or you need me to alter them, let me know. I don't want to make this too complicated!
Also, I am interested in making the 'Me' doll the bigger size so I am curious of the prices of those. What 'other stuff' is needed and what is an estimated price? Is this stuff I can pick up at Michael's? That's about all we have around here besides Wally World.
AND who wants to make a pattern for clothes? I so want to knit a pair of soaker pants and matching shirt for DS. Then a pair of knit jeans and a tank top for me. I am just afraid of making something that doesn't work. So if anyone has a basic idea of how many stitches, etc, I can tweak the pattern from there.
Oh, I am so excited!
ETA: Here is a pic of my sons hair, whatever you have that is close to that. ;)

01-05-2005, 10:23 PM
No, Amy, you should do it! I'm just a perfectionist. Your Grandpa doll can just have a regular-aged looking head, lol! No one will probably ever notice a fraction of the things I obsess over in head shaping. :tsk
Y'all asked so many questions, I can't remember them! If you get the pre-sewn body parts, the rest is hand-sewing. If not, you have to use someone else's pattern because we don't sell ours, and will need a machine. Prices for the extra supplies will be $5-$10 from a craft store or I can send them just for their actual cost. The wool batts for stuffing are probably impossible to find at decent prices locally. I can send that too, would be less than $5 per doll, depending on if you make your own heads.
Another thing to keep in mind is that if you make your own head, you should make your own wig in order for it to fit right.
All I need to know right now is who wants wigs and the details so I can get that started. That will take me the rest of this month. So edit your posts to say you definitely would like it etc...
Pricing for a large doll(16-18 inches) which is actually easier to make because you can see it better are as follows...
pre-sewn body parts: $8.00
inner head: $12.00
short wig: $12.00
long wig: $20.00 (uses a LOT of yarn and takes a few hours for experienced wigger)
Anything else? Oh, I can't really do trades since my sister does a bunch of this, but payment plans are definitely o.k! :mwah

Remember to post curly or straight hair and if you want me to pick the eye floss, let me know if you prefer light or dark if you care. Makes a big difference.
Also, about ethnic dolls, I do have pics and can take more of my nephew's dolls (he prefers dark skin) if you want to see. Asian too, I can show you how to make asian eyes. I have been working on an albino baby too, with purpley eyes!
Here is the wig list that I can see so far. Just edit my post to add/change yours.
drea2447: long blonde toddler curly or straight?
marnie: long black curly toddler and short straight sandy toddler
hunnybumm: blonde curly semi-short toddler and brownish red long straight big doll and short straight brown big doll

Quick question! When looking at hair color do we just use the choices listed on your site? If so then I noticed you have two different 'blond' colors and my DSs would have to be the lighter (whiter) of the two. ;)

I'm so excited, but I have a dumb question.. if we buy all the parts from you, what part of it is left for us to actually make? I'm trying to judge what I think I can take on as a totally non-crafty, non-sewing type.

The pre-sewn body parts are just stitched fabric. You will then have to turn them inside out, stuff them all with rolled up pieces of wool batting, hand sew them together, create a nose if you want to, cover the head, embroider eyes and mouth, sew it onto body, stitch wig onto head, cut loops, style and cut hair, make or buy clothes for it. You could omit facial features, which is what a traditional Waldorf doll looks like. It will take a lot longer than you think, but really simple. If you make your own head and wig it will add many, many hours, lol! (I don't want to discourage you, though!)

I am going to buy all pieces needed to make the 1 big doll and 1 small doll, plus all the extra stuff needed to make the doll.
I edited my original post to show a pic of my sons hair so you can decided what hair to get for his doll. I want the length to be a little longer than in the pic since I am letting his grow out as well. ;)
Also when is payment needed? This is going to end up being my Birthday present to myself. ;)

Rebecca - I would love it if you could do Asian eyes with lashes on the black haired doll! I can never seem to get it right. Do you have any pics of what it would look like?
Also, if anyone is wondering about presewn bodies - I say go for it. Especially if you are getting a premade head. You want them to fit right. It seems like there won't be much to do, but there really is - Rebecca is just doing all the hard, no fun parts for us (well, those are just the hard no fun parts in my opinion, because I suck at them , lol)

I can take pics next time I go over to my sister's house, we have 2 or 3 Asian dolls in her sewing room. Annie, you do know that you have to embroider your own eyes, right? That's where you really make the doll your own and the most satisfying part of making the doll! I'll hold your hand through , it'll turn out great!

No, it won't get dirty too soon. They are definitely washable as well. Eleanor has one which is absolutely stark white and she's been throwing it on the floor for over a year and I've never washed it, it's still stark white. And I have 3 dogs and poor housecleaning skills. :superb

Pam,
I sent yours parcel post because priority was going to be $12, so it will still be a few days probably snow

Well that is good to know...And might as well save the money for priority since I am not at home anyway! Parcel post is strange...sometimes it is really slow and sometimes really fas ---just depends on how full the postal trucks are I guess.

Woo! I got my supplies today and I'm so intimidated! I can't believe you made all those parts for us! Thank YOU!!
Be gentle with us "uncrafty with things that are not paper" types. ;) I can make handmade books and journals, but I seem to fall apart when I deal with fabric!

I just got back to town about an hour and a half ago....Package sitting on my front step (came today - dh has been checking for me)
I haven't opened anything...but it looks great...The wig looks like my dd's hair the way it is ---overwhelming...but I am sure I will get it figured out..

The hair isn't so overwhelming once the loops are cut, just don't go cutting it quite yet! :butterfly

Hey rebecca, what yarn did you use for carrot-girl? i think i want crazy funky hair for my doll, will that work?

That was handpaintedyarn olive. Yes! You can use any yarn you want. I love alpaca boucle too. But you can use anything! Do you crochet?

I plan on leaving it long....As a goal for DD - who recently got the urge to give herself a trim. (This was during my early plague and I thought she was asleep too..she apparently woke before me) She has NO Bangs...she didn't have them before - and she took a big chunk out of the side too....
I wouldn't want any doll having her hair right now.
Of course I am seriously thinking of making this doll for ME!

We'll start tomorrow! A couple people don't have their supplies, but they can catch up :bigups: We'll do the head tomorrow!! If you don't have push pins, get them. The kind with the ball on the end.

Man I have to go buy pins.....
What other supplies might I need to get while out and about? What needles do you recommend? Just regular hand sewing needles?
botannie
03-23-2005, 08:34 PM
...I think you'll need a 5 inch doll needle also. Am I right?
mommomrebecca
03-23-2005, 08:41 PM
You'll need a 5 inch doll needle, a 3 inch doll needle and a regular needle. :bigups: They might be called embroidery needles, and they will be between 5 and 5 1/2, etc...
pmcgary
03-23-2005, 09:56 PM
I should be able to manage that....Although the bigger shopping challenge is going to be getting stuff for Easter with a 3 and 5 year old in tow...

Yep! All you need are some push pins. I'm on my way over to my sister's house now, so I'll probably send you all your first "lesson" by lunch time. (west coast) :bigups:
