For those who do (or have tried) both, what do you see as each art's inherant advantages/strengths when compared to the other?

Here are some of my thoughts:

Knit:
Can be thinner (and, relatedly, uses less yarn)
Cables!
Easy to do squares
Easier to do large, flat projects?
Patterns are more readily available
Ribbing

Crochet:
Can do round easily (round is, like, the second thing you learn!)
Lends itself more readily to interesting stitches
Easier to do small or three-dimentional projects
Easier to start with, harder to terminally screw up (drop a hook, you have maybe a little problem; drop a needle, as a beginner your project is probably hosed. Mine certainly were!)
Speedy

So those are some of my thoughts based on my experience or things I've heard. YMMV

For me, the big killer is that knit is so so so slow - I love how quick crochet is.

I do wish that I liked knitting though - tons of cute clothing patterns out there!

I am pretty quick at both, so speed isn't really a factor. I have nerve damage in my right arm/wrist and knitting seems to bother it less for some reason. I found a book at the library that I'll have to post the title later, but it had hundreds of stitches/patterns for repeats for knitting that blew my mind. It was so cool! I had thought knitting seemed a bit limited in the diversity dept, but that book so proved me wrong :LOL I'll never stop hooking (:brow) but I do love to knit now!

While I can knit normally, I have to crochet lefthanded. It got very frustrating for me to keep having to "reverse" crochet patterns...so anything more complicated that a granny square was just too much work....

I can single crochet still...Need to for many of the LTK patterns....I think I may try the crochet thing again....but I will need support for sure. Awhile back on another list I got a link for learning to crochet left handed. I will be using that "someday"

I learned to crochet first, and so for me it's easier & faster. However, I think knitting looks cleaner & is better for garments. I still enjoy both. And sewing, quilting, etc, etc. :lookroun:

Oh, but there are rib stitches and cable stitches in crochet!

Look at my baby pants:

I used a rib stitch that is just as stretchy as knit. There's a good book in Wal-mart that teaches you to make a quilt with 64 different stitches. I never finished the quilt, but it is a great reference for see all the different ways you can use crochet.

I like that I can make up a pattern as I go with crochet. With knit, I have to plan in advance. :D
