View Full Version : Clap-oh-TEE WIP Thread

I thought it would be fun to have a separate thread for WIP and then a "Completed Work" Thread. Does that sound good to everyone.
I got started... I couldnt help myself. As I said, Iplan to make more.
Here's how it's going so far:
http://www.woolywonder.com/lookie/clapotis/increases1.jpg
DH thought it would make good underpants:
http://www.woolywonder.com/lookie/clapotis/scottsillyC.jpg
He's so silly.
I'm worried that I won't love how it pools. But it is constantly changing width, so I bet it will be ok. Right?? I dont want big pink splootches and dark moody blue ones. I want a mixitup.
:fingersx:
The setup rows were slighty tricky. I did them on bamboo so they would be a little stickier with this slick yarn. I also wasnt sure at the beginning of the rows when it says "sl1" if I should slip knitwise or purlwise. I tried it both ways and picked what I like best. I wonder what you would have done, [username:2ce843d7c5]? ;)
imonion

that looks so nice! i think i would have assumed slipknitwise, is that the one you liked the best?

I'd have slipped purlwise, becuase generally that's the assumed way to slip, unless it's tated otherwise ;)
Aurora
12-29-2004, 10:18 AM
Not that I am an expert by any means, but I would slip purl wise. snow
pamelamama
12-29-2004, 10:27 AM
Well, I started out slipping the knit stitches knitwise and the purl stitches purwise. LIked how that looked. Then I looked at the knitty abbrviation info:
sl slip
slp slip one as if to purl
http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/patterns.html
I figured if there was a special instruction for sl as if to purl, the default must be slip as if to knit. So I tried that for a couple of rows and it didn't look as pretty as my original method so I frogged it back (Frogging silk = very smooth)
Decided to stick with my original plan.
Just for fun, I wrote Kate Gilbert who said:
Pamela,
I think I was always slipping them purlwise, but if you're happy with the effect you're getting, I would keep doing it like you are!
Happy knitting,
Kate
So, Theresa, correct as usual! :cheer
Next clapotis I'll try it all slp!
xoox
Seeing as how the ClapO has the dropped stitches, I'm sure the pooling won't be quite as obvious on the finished scarf. It's quite lovely! I like those colors a lot. Enjoy!

It's thin merino roving, unspun, very soft!. Knit with 15mm needles (even thicker than your 000, probably something like 000000 ;-) ) The same stuff I made the hat that went with the first sheepy pants (the bright blue and green ones) I made. This is the "bright pastel" version in basic magenta, yellow & blue
I get it from that new wholesale place I was raving about a months or so ago. Its around 16 euros (about 24 dollars) for 500grams, a YS retails it for 3 times as much. This clapotis used 400grams.

Oooh, I want to join in on the fun! I have caught Clapotis fever after seeing this thread a few days ago. I think I've seen just about every Clapotis pic that's out in blogland and they are so gorgeous!! It's about time I knit something for myself :)
And coincidentally, Melissa (mhurst) had just sent me a 20% off coupon to a LYS that I hadn't visited before. So I packed Isaac up in the car (Jules was too busy painting with daddy) and went this morning. I got a great deal on some silk/cashmere yarn ($12 a skein!) and just dyed it this afternoon. Here's a pic of it in the dryer (I am very impatient and want to cast on *tonight*!).
http://thefegelmans.com/Proj_pics/clapotis1.jpg
The flash washed it out a bit because it's got such a nice sheen to it, but it's in shades of orange, blue and purple, similar to my Northern/Southern Lights soaker.
This'll be the most luxurious yarn I've ever knit with so I am really looking forward to it. Dry, dry, dry...

OK -- here's the very small amount of progress I've made. I had to start over because my yarn is on the thin side and 8's just weren't working. So I've switched to 6's and I guess I'll have a mini-clapotis. Actually, I saw this site and she used 6's. Hers is just gorgeous...

My observations so far:
Fancy stitch markers catch on the yarn, very annoying. I switched to my ol'reliable plastic saftey pin type ones and then flung them all but the first and last. Now I'm down to one.
Ah. I thought I had more to say, but now I can't remember. :hmm
koolsheepmama
01-03-2005, 02:25 PM
I'm with you Pamela. You'll notice I only have the first three markers in place. And yes, the fancy one is about to get ditched. That's a good idea just to keep the first and the last, to remind me to add a yo when I've grown enough at the edges.
Thanks about the colors. I think they're pretty accurate. I just bought an Ott light so I can take decent pics indoors. I should have been knitting all afternoon, but now I want to start a knitting blog so I'm looking in that. Too many projects...
When's everyone else getting their yarn delivered?
stormintheattic
01-03-2005, 02:53 PM
Pam, Karen, my markers caught too! I used loops of string because even plastic ones got caught in my yarn.

Ehh, that L&L went higher than I wanted to pay.
So would the little plastic rings work ok? Does it become obvious after a while where you need to do stuff? I'm anal about stitch markers, I usually leave them in even when it's obvious...

01-12-2005, 07:40 AM
So am I a slow knitter?
I'm usually not terribly concerned with the amount of time it takes me to knit a project. I knit for enjoyment, not speed. But I've set myself a little challenge and was doing some calculating to see how much knitting I'd need to do to meet it. Todd and I have tickets for the symphony Saturday night and I would love to be able to wear my obsession... I mean, Clapotis. So I watched the clock during my 6 am team call this morning (I *love* conference calls from home!) and it's taking me an hour from drop-stitch to drop-stitch on the straight rows (i.e., one hour for each 12 row repeat in the straight section). I just dropped the seventh stitch, so I have 5 more to go before the decreasing, but I think I may add one or two repeats to get some extra length. So let's say I have 7 more repeats plus the decrease section which I'm guessing will take 3 hours. Ten hours of knitting and I have three evenings this week, plus maybe some time on Saturday, although it's not always easy to fit any knitting time in when the kids are up and about. Seems pretty iffy. Luckily, the bills and laundry are done for the week so I can sit down right after the kids are in bed and work on it until I need to turn in. Of course, I need to pay some attention to Todd too... I guess we'll see, but I'm gonna give it a try!

During a 2-hour movie 2 nights ago I got from the 3rd dropped stitch to halfway to the 5th dropped stitch ~ so if I'm faster than you, then it's just by a little. Of course I didn't have any time to work on it last night so I'm still halfway to the 5th dropped stitch. I'm hoping to make it to at least the 7th tonight... we'll see.
I hope you get yours finished to wear on Saturday ~ and of course we'll need pics! ;)

Wow Karen, That is gorgeous!! I liked the drape in the previous picture, and it looks even better finished (LOL). That yarn and those colors were a great choice.
a note on mine: I finished it up Sunday night, and tried it out Monday morning. No pictures since a)I have to decide which disk on my camera to format (three full atm) and b) haven't figured out how to take pictures off DS's camera and put them onto the computer (and that was the point to him getting one!)
Anyone else finished or ready to show pictures? I've really enjoyed the show and tell.

beautiful Karen!
....I started another one...could help myself. Now about halfyway through my 3rd clapotis...this one is out of my own spun yarn, good for practicing spinning, not the best yarn for a clapotis though, its really thick, then miniscully thin & all kinds of colours because i am using leftover bits of dyed felting wool. But hey, I am learning & its gonna be very personal, handdyed, handspun, handknit.

Has anyone tried this with a lighter weight yarn? I have some baby alpaca silk I bought from elann.com a month ago that isn't working for the scarf I wanted to make and wondered if I should try with this. It seems like it would work, but just be smaller.
Any advice?

i'd suggest using smaller needles, too, like size 6, and then you'll have a nice mini-clap ;)

Thanks, from my obsessive reading about the pattern it seems that it's one that's fairly forgiving when it comes to gauge - I just hope I have enough yardage now.
BTW Theresa - I ordered a custom handpaint from you (I'm alrady planning another) - I hope that's okay even though I'm a newbie.

hey pam :) I suggest to someone o knitter's review to try a casmerino, ACMoore has a "luxury cashmerino" something or other that I think would work well. It would be solid, then, but still quite lovely, I think (and if I recall, it was about $4 a ball, so way cheaper, LOL!)

I finished my clap! I think I've got spinning down now. It started with chunky thick n thin single ply yarn, I finished with 3 ply (navajo plied) fingering weight plied to worsted...kinda wonky as a whole and totally unwearable for me, waaaaaaaaaaay to may colours. I think its gonna be wall-art ;-)

Pam, we are twins!!! I was planning to use some www.handpaintedyarn.com worsted weight merino when I can sneak another yarn purchase past dh. It is beautifully shiny and soft and drapey and I think would make a good poormans option for the clap $7.50 for 3.5oz/100g (so I think 3 skeins should do it maybe 4 to be on the safe side although I think it's 218 yds/skein so slightly more yardage than noro - no I'm thinking definitely 4 now) $30 for a clap can't be bad ;) (notice I'm not factoring in postage - this is part of my yarn addicts justification for buying lol)

I have my yarn finally, but may get myself kicked off this thread...I have an acrylic....No where around here had anything I liked in a nice silk/wool or anything close - that I could afford.
I fell in love with the colorways of the yarn....and the one I really liked they didn't have enough of - until I saw the worker putting stuff out- and there was another big skein of the stuff.
So, I will be starting the el cheapo verson.
I got to see and pet some of the Lorna's Laces stuff today at the LYS...REALLY nice....I was afraid they would charge me $5 to touch it...It was I think $37-40 depending on what you wanted....I have decided this LYS is nice but a bit pricey..They are selling Outback for $15 and Cascade for 6.60 and Encore for $5... THe plymouth stuff I can get for less at the other LYS AND get a discount (and the help is more friendly - less snobby!)

So I have a quick ?... I've been knitting like crazy and made it to the first dropped stitch. When she says to pick up the bar and make sure it's not twisted, then ktbl, that DOES twist the st so that it closes up, correct? She specifically says make sure it's not twisted when you pick it up so that when you ktbl it DOES twist, right? And there's a little gap there afterwards, under it, before the ladder of dropped stitches underneath? :faint I sure hope so, because I just unraveled that whole bit. :teary It felt so naughty.

yep, that's right :) You want to twist it with the tbl, so that it looks right as you continue the work.
I've found with the andromeda it's been easier to drop all the stitches every few rows, becuase the yarn likes to stick together and after say, 6 or 8 rows you really have to work to get them to drop. So, I've been dropping each of them every 4 or 6 rows ;) Plus, I'm impatient and I like to see how it looks with the dropped stitches, LOL!

I think it's much more fun to watch the whole thing progressing with the drops and all, than just having a boring stockinette piece with the twisted stitches every once in a while ;) I've abandoned the markers too, though, so I'm probably not a good example (well,a ctually I'll admit I never even started with the markers, LOL)

Is this a sickness?
It is! I think it has something to do with the stitchdropping...only so many more rows until you get to drop another one. That and the lovely flowy-ness of the fabric ofcourse. Even with my homespun stuff it still very airy.
My wip...well it was technically still that when I took the picture. I needed to weave in the beginning and end thread. Excuse the loosy pictures.

The pinkish purple on the right/bottom is my first attent at spinning after the hat I made for Fee, its stuffing wool and awfully lumpy. I proceeded to spin different fibres to keep up with the knitting of the clap. The greens and reds are KA dyed superwashmerino that I didnt know was superwashed when I bought it for felting originally (and we all know that wont felt). The there is my first attent at plying, followed by some leftover rainbowroving that I spun & plied with thin sockwool. On to some organic Texel spun frow the fleece, then KA dyed green, yellow, red and purple, then plied because the yarn I was spinning now was getting to be too thin. This clapotis basically taught me how to spin...ok its not the thinnest or evenest of yarns yet but its definately workable.
I decided it isnt gonna be for me though.

Please be warned, spinning is just as addicitve as knitting is!

I have made it through 2 drops....I know I need to post a picture.....the acrylic doesn't give that drap...And later this week I go off in search of something at the other LYS.
This is more addictive than knitting soakers...And there won't be any training/learning that makes me not need a scarf.

the silk content. you know how silk smells? it's probably just me. i swear i'm the only one it bothers. my mother has a whole wardrobe of silk twinsets, that's practically all she wears (now that I'm an adult, LOL). really, i bet it wouldn't bother anyone else! :)
Well, I didn't make it to the next section, but I'm only 8 rows away! It's just really late and I need to go to bed now. I'm sure I'll get through it during lunch tomorrow. :love

I will have to check this out as I am pretty sensitive. Funny but when I worked retail we had customers complaining about a particular sweater.....One day the manager asked me if mine smelled and if it went away when I washed it. I said "yes it smells....I think it is the wool"....The sweater wasn't 100% but it definitely has that "sheepy" smell.....I wash infrequently b/c I LIKE that smell.....Takes all kinds I guess!

Do you all think cotton would work for this? I have some pretty pink cotton that might make nice colors, but I don't know if the drape will be right. I'm still on a quest for the perfect silk to make one for myself. I'm going to a knitting convention next month so I'm going to scour the sales floor there for the perfect clap yarn!

I am waiting for my yarn as well. I ordered from the Elijah colorway from Theresa. I looked through all the choices and just went with which one "called" to me the most.
I gotta tell you all, this Clapotis is going to be a lot classier than the "Blue's Clues" fleece blanket I drape over my shoulders in the evenings!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/mama2babybiggirl/DSCF0425.jpg
I think about 7 dropped stitches. This has also become a major frogging project at times...
How are people keeping track of where they are in the rows when tending to children and other interferences?
littleturtlemama
01-28-2005, 06:04 PM
I haven't been keeping track of rows, just sort of reading the work to see where the twisted stitches are and where my dropped stitches are (one of the benefits of dropping them all every few rows, you can follow the pattern int he work easier) ;)
averymybaby
01-28-2005, 07:08 PM
i'm just seeing where i am by using the markers and getting the rhythm down. when i've dropped 13 stitches ill look at the pattern again for the dec section.

Pretty Pam!! What kind of yarn was it again? you said acrylic I think... the colors are pretty!
It is Caron and I don't remember the name of the colorway....I just was drawn to it in the store...I just don't think it is going to have the same "feel" as a clap from silk/wool....
But on the plus side- it was very inexpensive and a great way to get used to the pattern....
(I am still on my first skein of yarn - it is one of the one pounders.....and I think I am about 1/2 done or a bit more...)
The colors in it are similar to those in Pamela G's...though mine has shorter runs of color so they look entirely different....
