dyeing items already knitted?

Has anybody ever dyed items that have already been knit? I don't mean just changing the overall color but also having a tye dye effect? I've found plenty of stuff online about dyeing the actual yarn but nothing about dyeing something already knitted? Do you have any tips or links to share?

I've dip-dyed several pairs of pants & tie dyed thick wool fabric. Dip-dyeing knitwear is pretty much the same as dip-dyeing yarn section by section.
Tie dyeing something knit probably works too but you would have to use the microwave method for setting the colour.

I remember Pam knit something and had it tie- dyed to match a shirt. There were photos. I don't have time to look it up now but you might pm her, she might remember the title. ;)
