I want to knit this hat, but I'm a bit confused reading the chart (my first).

The chart says "No stitch". What does that mean? Any other tips on reading charts will also be appreciated.

I think I'm just really dense... what does "no stitching together" mean? :hmm Is it a slip stitch?

just act like it's not there. it just means there's no stitch there. it's the holes in the hat.

it's just a way of saying that that stitch has been eliminated
it's to keep the chart looking clean and even, but if you look above the spot where the first "no stitch" symbol appears, there's a decrease

Hi There,
That's actually my pattern so I thought I'd pipe in.
No stitch means, literally, there is no stitch there. It's nothing, it's not a hole, it's not anything, it just allows the different portions of the chart to align so that it is a better representation of what the final pattern will look like.
When you get to a row with a black box, just ignore the black box, regardless of where it appears. In the case of the Comet hat, you are casting on only 8 stitches each of which represents one repeat of the chart pattern. When you get to row three you work an increase in each stitch giving you a total of 16 stitches. The black stitches on each side of that portion of the chart have no meaning.

Let me know if you need further elaboration.

Thanks everyone... I'm still confused! :bang And wow, I can't believe Marnie is here. Welcome! I love your patterns. They are feminine without being too cutesy (ie a 30ish mama like myself will be able to wear it). Anyways, back to the pattern.
So I cast on 8 stitches, and the pattern says:
ns k ns ns ns...
So do I just knit one for the first pattern, knit another one for the next repeat.. 8 stitches. Ah... I think I might be understanding it now. Knit whatever is on the pattern thats not "no stitch" and then move on to do the next repeat.
Thank you so much!
I'm planning to do this hat and "nearly gloves" using peace fleece worsted. I hope it will work...

I think you have it. Just knit anythign that ins't a black box. You will work the chart 8 times for one round of the hat.
:)

Thanks for the invite and let me know if there is anything I can do to help. You are always welcome to contact me directly with pattern questions. My email is all over my website :D

Wow! marnie is here! Do you make knitting Goddess undies in anything but thong? I just can't get used to the wedgie thing....

And I don't know anything about charts, just to stay on topic!

Actually, I have little control over what I can put my cartoons on. I use CafePress and they only offer thongs. I can make any of the products listed here:
http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/?viewall=true

if there is something there that you like but don't see on my site, I'd be happy to put it in the store with any of the characters on it.
