So, I am going to make a soaker for Christmas for a friends' baby boy who is the same age as Avery. The problem is, she is silly and won't tell me what colors he (she?) would like. I only have the one dd and have never dyed anything specifically for a boy but would like to give it a shot. This baby is the manliest of babies and must have a manly soaker.
I just got some fishermans' to work with today, and I bought the Wilton's primary starter set, I have KA, and a little procion (fuschia, yellow, and turq). WWYD? (Any Wilton's dyeing tips appreciated too, I've never done it before).
I was thinking vibrant, manly colors, but what? And how much of each color?

Hmmm I've never used wilton's before but I've used acid, procion and KA dyes.
For boyish colors I would vote for green and blue or different shades, brown and white.....
That's about it for now :)

Love it!
I like to put browns and blues, or brown and orange on my manly man, and I'm making a hat for him in the HPY amazonas right now and those colors are veeery manly. Must be manly man Ethan. Oh, and we also have a royal blue, turquoise and red soaker that rules the world.

love the khaki idea. I right now am doing a khaki, russet and forest green sweater for a manly-baby
if you want a manly green, wild kiwi watermelon is a darker shade than lime. you can make it teal with a couple drops of blue food coloring or forest-y with a tiny (tiny!) bit of red.

If you could figure out a camo that would be cool...I vote earthy colors...green and brown.

I like darker colors on DS, baby blue isn't really for us right now (as a nb yes, but now I need colors than can cover some dirt  )
I love the khaki idea. My absolute favorite colorway of all time is Theresa's Autumn Harvest :love. It has tan, oranges, deep reds, and greens a nice fall day. I made DS's wondershorts out of it and looks good.
Also any green and blue color combo is nice.

I think even manly babies need color in their lives...I love the earth tones, but my little guy would get lost in my jungle of a back yard in those colors. I like bright blues and greens with hints of yellows or purples...
Sorry I haven't yet tried anything but KA
here is a link to a bright skein I dyed.

OK, I'm definitely getting a khaki sense here. Could I tea-dye some of it maybe to get a khaki color? Dye some brown and then include some blue and or green?
Does that sound ugly? ;)

OK, I just got the total veto on browns. Blues and greens, it is. Royal blue? Forest Green? How do I get that with Wiltons'??

you may have to mix to get the forest green...green and a little black. i have some royal blue here, but it's not true blue. it has some red in it.

I have used the moss green and I bet if you used alot of it you would get a great forest green. I used it for these pants:

The darker shades are almost forest green.
As for royal blue, you'll have a pretty hard time getting that out of wiltons. It really does seperate quie a bit. Here one pic of the blue I was able to get from it:

The trick to keep it from seperating too much is to start off with a bath of lukewarm water, dissolve the wiltons, add the yarn, bring to almost boiling, then add the vinegar. It will still seperate but not as much as if you add the yarn while it's hot.
Hope this helps!!!
