I had my credit card number stolen about a week or so ago, luckily the company that the person was trying to buy from caught them and refunded my money before the purchase went through. I am generaly very cautious to only use my CC at secure well known sites (PayPal, eBay, MCI, etc). Well, I went to Joann.com to get some Black Pantons Classic Merion (I really love this stuff). Since I have a new CC number I have to re-enter the info. Well, the page where it asked for my name, addy, email addy and CC number was NOT secure. It doesn't have the little lock icon at the bottom. The previous page had the lock, as well as other pages, but not that one. There are 2 links stateing that the page is secure yet the icon doesn't appear. I really want the yarn and I want to use the free shipping code, but I am not willing to risk my CC number being stolen again.
Is anyone farmiliar with site security and the little lock icon? I was under the impression that if the lock icon isn't there then any info you put in on that page is subject to being stolen.
Help?

I have no idea, but always assumed that if that little lock icon wasn't there then the page was NOT secure...
I did find this, and hopefully it will help you :)
cut and pasted from Joanns website:
To place an order with our Customer Care department, call customer care Monday thru Friday from 9:00am EST to 6:00pm EST at 1-800-525-4951.
Hopefully you really can place an order over the phone with them!
Good Luck

Yeah, you can email one of those customer care people and send them a reply email with your credit card number, or just call. That's what I do, because the no lock thing freaks me out too.

send them a reply email with your credit card number
No, no, no - never send your CC number via email!
And I wouldn't use your CC number at a site without the lock. Can you call them and see why it isn't there? If someone got your CC number from Joann's, then I bet your aren't the only one that this happened to. That is serious.
Laura (who has been dealing with CC fraud up the behind for the last 4 months - it ain't pretty at all. The good news is that we helped the cops bust a ring of Russian guys in PA LOL!)

Oh man that sucks!
But thank you for letting us know for sure!
I usually don't enter info without the little lock on the bottom of the page but man that's serious!
Yes please never email your cc info via email that's not secure....
YAY! Laura for helping fight dishonest people and a whole ring of them WOWZA!

The locks at the bottom signify encription keys. I don't know why there wouldn't be one on previous pages but not no that one. I do know that credit card info is supposed to go straight to the banks and that the companies have no record of them other than type of card. Your card number is more likely stolen through an email or buying something in a brick and mortor store. In retail all they have to do is print copy and they get a copy of ALL your info. A ton of stolen credit cards here in california were attributed to banks selling account info to fraudlant companies. Most of the top banks do this. BLARG!!
I get spoof emails about 2x per week from people pretending to be ebay and asking to confirm account details, cc numbers etc. They're really convincing looking and often say things like - your account is under threat or someone has tried to hijack your account etc. Could they have stolen your number this way? I know other people have had this happen.

IF you go the joanns site and read- I think it under ordering ...it does tell about their site and security with ordering...might alleviate your fears....
With my computer (don't know if it is in my software or something my ISP has going) but it gives me a popup when I move from something that is secure to something that is insecure....
I think you are pretty safe dealing with JoAnn's
I get the "spoof" emails too....the ones from the banks and cc co. crack me up...say they are going to close my account if I don't do as they ask...Hello what about people w/out internet? How would they verify their account info. IF this stuff were true.I even get them from a bank i have never heard of let alone have a cc with.

I defintily wouldn't send my CC info through an email, I know that isn't secure.
The funny thing is that on the ordering page there are two links letting you know how 'secure' their site is, both of those links say to look for the lock icon at the bottom of the page. Yet the icon isn't there. I tried sending an email to them but it kept saying "* are required feilds" and it wouldn't go through eventhough everything was filled out.
The only email I have gotten is from PayPal to verify my account info. But it took me to the PayPal.com url to enter my info. I did follow the link from the email though. I followed the link knowing that people have been known to request your info who are not associted with PayPal, but I assumed since I ended up at the PayPal.com addy it was for real.
I was going to call the 1800 number tomorrow since they are only open during normal business hours. I would feel a lot more comfortable ordering over the phone than through a non secure web page. But I would much prefer the secure web page. I am going to see what the phone operator says about the non secure page but I highly doubt they will have a clue.
Anyways, I know Joann.com is a pretty well know site, at least around here, so I just assumed it was safe but I don't want to chance it. Especially since my CC number was stolen last time only a month after my first Joann.com visit. And this is the first time it has happened in 3 1/2 years of making random internet purchances. It is probably just coincidence but I just don't want to chance it, especially with the holidays coming up. I just can't go another 2 weeks with no CC, to much shopping to do. ;)

You do have to watch the scam email stuff any more...they can do some strange stuff where the links actually take you to the actual .com they are posing as....
At least at this point it appears that the scams are contacting people and asking them to verify the account information or the account will be closed.....Making it seem like it is routine....
When you sign up with pay pal...you know what you have done and are expecting that email...and it is different from the other stuff...I think it just asks for confirmation- you don't have to reenter confidential info. over again IIRC.
I would opt for the phone myself. Sometimes it is nice to deal with a REAL person.
And in case anyone is into kids stuff....Hearth Song - great stuff- has phone specials...I always look on line and make my list and then call just to get those specials.(I am betting since they are owned by same folks at Magic Cabin and Hearth and Plow that they do the same thing.)
